Review

The Corrs are a blending of Irish folk, sugary sweet pop, and rock. The family band has been a big success in Europe before coming to America in 1999. I hadn't heard of them before their appearance on "Saturday Night Live". This DVD captures them in concert at the Royal Albert Hall on St. Patrick's Day in 1998. It is a good representation of the group's music and charm, led by lead singer Andrea Corr. Production values are high for the concert and also on the DVD.
Taking material from their two albums, "Forgiven, Not Forgotten", and "Talk On Corners", the concert also has a guest appearance by Mick Fleetwood on drums for three numbers. The entire concert lineup is: When He's Not Around No Good For Me Love To Love You Forgiven Not Forgotten Joy Of Life Intimacy What Can I Do The Right Time Queen Of Hollywood Dreams Haste To The Wedding Runaway Only When I Sleep Hopelessly Addicted I Never Loved You Anyway So Young Toss The Feathers The bands strengths rely on the four family members -Andrea on lead vocals and tin whistle, Caroline on drums and vocals, Sharon on violin and vocals, and brother Jim on guitar and keyboards. Lead guitar is provided by band members Conor Brady and Keith Duffy on bass. The band's centerpiece is clearly Andrea, who is charming and expressive as she belts out the songs, mostly love ballads. The band also shows its heritage with the instrumental Irish jigs they perform, such as Toss The Feathers and Haste To The Wedding. Everyone is right on through the concert; Andrea's voice starts to squeak a bit on the final vocals but just slightly.

Picture and Sound

Picture-Originally broadcast over BBC television, the concert is fullscreen and is bright and colorful. There is a bit of haze but that comes from the stage, as you can see billowing fog machines adding atmospherics to the stage area. Camera work is well coordinated with the music in its switching during the numbers, and include a good variety of angles and shots. Sound-Dolby 5.1 surround adds dimension, especially in the bass, making the band's sound a bit heavy. Not much information is channeled through the rear surrounds, as the concert was remixed from original stereo soundtrack, but the bass adds a lot to the concert effect. The DVD defaults to two channel stereo. You have to choose 5.1 audio from the options menu.

Extras

The disc is mostly a concert video but it does include a discography of the Corrs American albums (they have a few imports available). Also, some DVD-ROM Web links are provided along with individual song selection.

Summary

Anyone who likes this band will enjoy this DVD as it fully represents their strongest songs to date. All the songs are played well with good production values. Andrea Corr is dynamic and full of energy, and Mick Fleetwood's guest appearance is an added bonus. The band does well in concert and this DVD is a showcase of their talent.

Masters Of Horror: Pelts

Category: DVD Reviews
I always look forward to reviewing discs in the "Masters of Horror" series, especially when the episodes are directed by true legends of the genre, even though many of them (John Carpenter, Stuart Gordon & Larry Cohen come immediately to mind) haven't made a truly great movie in quite some time. I'd add Italian horror maven Dario Argento to that same list. Beginning in the late 80s, his films have certainly been watchable, but pale in comparison to early classics like "Deep Red", "Inferno" and "Suspiria" (the last one being a nightmarish masterpiece). But while "Masters of Horror" has allowed directors like Carpenter & Cohen to do some of their best work in years, Argento's second contribution to the series, "Pelts," is kind of a disappointment. Not because it's bad, but because we've seen in the past what a visual virtuoso he can be, especially when he focuses less on telling a concrete story than building fear through atmosphere and tension ("Suspiria" was dark, suspenseful and scary, even though didn't always make a lot of sense). That said, "Pelts" is more story-driven, and tells a good one. But even though there are a few all-to-brief scenes that have Argento's visual stamp all over them, this looks like it could have been directed by anybody; his relatively conventional approach to the material is what sometimes works against it.
