Review

This British horror film, touted as a dark comedy, is unfortunately not very funny. It ain’t all that scary, either. There are a few amusing moments here and there (particularly at the beginning), and some impressive death scenes, but there’s little more to separate this from the countless other mutant-backwoods-psycho movies out there.

Andy Serkis and Reese Shearsmith are two bumbling, bickering brothers who botch up the kidnaping of a wealthy strip-club owner’s daughter. They hide out at a remote cabin in the woods with the girl’s step-brother (who’s in on the job), while the club owners thugs hunt them down. That’s pretty-much the plot of the thing, and there aren’t too many surprises to be found. The performances are decent (though Serkis is a bit miscast), and the first thirty minutes, featuring the interaction between the leads as things go from bad to worse, are arguably the funniest. Ironically, once the tone switches from botched caper to full-blooded horror, the movie promptly falls apart. Characters are introduced strictly as monster fodder, dying one-by-one until the movie ends with an abrupt and stupid climax. While it doesn’t really work as a horror movie, some of the death scenes are impressive, especially when one character meets her end by via shovel decapitation.

Picture and Sound

The movie is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen, and the overall picture is decent. The sound quality is pretty good, too, though nothing exceptional.

Extras

Some deleted scenes are included, as well as a pretty amusing outtake reel. The most perplexing bonus is one which allows you to make an additional digital copy for either your PC or PSP. According to the box, this feature must be used by August 11 of this year. Why anyone would actually want an extra copy of this to cart around, since most PCs let you play the DVD itself, is beyond me.

Summary

“The Cottage” promises both laughs and scares, but delivers little of either, not the way previous British horror-comedies have (such as “Shaun of the Dead” and the underrated “Dog Soldiers”). It might be worth renting on a slow night, but the movie is definitely a case of been-there-seen-that.

Columbo - The Complete Second Season

Category: DVD Reviews
Back in the day, when I lived in a house with only one TV and three channels, I was subjected to a lot of episodes of NBC's "Sunday Mystery Movie" series, which my parents loved (probably payback for them turning over the TV to me & my sister every Friday to catch "The Brady Bunch" & "The Partridge Family"). The "Sunday Mystery Movie" consisted of feature-length episodes with a rotating line-up of detectives. One week we'd see a 'McCloud' episode, another week it might be 'Banacek' or 'MacMillan & Wife' or 'Cool Million' (I would later go out of my way to catch a'Snoop Sisters' episode that featured Alice Cooper, who was the latest rock star to piss off my parents) . Against my will, I was subjected to a lot of "Mystery Movie" episodes (and it's maddeningly catchy theme song), and eventually grew to like the show. My favorites were the 'Columbo' episodes. The character, immortalized by Peter Falk, has become a pop icon, and this boxed set of the second season will have 'Columbo' fans and '70s TV nostalgics in hog heaven, as long as they aren't seeking out any additional extras.
