Review

The original CSI series continues to be one of the best with exciting and detailed episodes. The crime team, led by William L. Petersen, explore a number of bizarre and puzzling murder investigations with style, deadpan humor, and creative plotlines that have made this such a huge, hit series.
Each disc contains four episodes ; the sixth disc contains three and extras. The episodes investigate crimes in Las Vegas and so many deal with the Vegas lifestyle. In this season, Petersen is dealing with his hearing loss, and other issues surface during the course of the year for other team members. These are always subtly hinted at and never turn the show into a complicated soap surrounding the characters. The successful formula include the audience witnessing or discovering the crime in the first five minutes and the rest of the show deals with how the team finds the truth. Sometimes harsh, the team is dedicated to finding out what happened and has the audience hooked along with them. The crimes are sometimes extraordinarily brutal in nature, which brings more realism to the team's job but also a cautionary note for parents of small children. This is definitely adult fare. It is surprisingly gory for a network television show. Themes include rape, child murder, baby death, severed heads, many slashed throats, execution style murders, amusement park accidents, and DNA testing results in the series finale. The writing for the show is both creative and risk taking. Not every show has a happy ending. All keep you guessing until the end. It is highly entertaining and will get you hooked on the show in no time at all.

Picture and Sound

Paramount and CBS went the extra mile on these discs, presenting both a widescreen picture and 5.1 Dolby sound for home theater owners. Picture is clear and sharp with no visible flaws or artifacts. Photography and effects are almost too real and there are many close ups of victims and of entry wounds and their effects on the body. Surround sound is full and rich with plenty of information for all five speakers.

Extras

This season's major extra concentrates on the making of an episode from start to finish. The main features include writing the Script, with the creation of a concept and the subsequent script, Pre-production, in which the crew plans and prepares for the script work, the production; where scenes are shot on location and captured , and post production, where it is all pieced together into a story for the series. Very interesting stuff for film buffs. There is also commentaries on seven featured episodes throughout the discs. Packaging is plastic blisterpak, away from the cardboard of earlier season sets.

Summary

Another strong season for one of the best television dramas still going strong. The cast has their roles down solid, and the variety of the show's crimes keeps the audience coming back every week for more. Writing is excellent and original. A bit spendy, this box set is a good buy for those fans of the show and anyone with an interest in mystery and Forensic Science.

Ah, The Coreys...two marginally talented relics from the 80s whose fluke success in "The Lost Boys" spawned a slew of cynically packaged Hollywood products reteaming these heartthrobs to bilk gullible teenagers out of their allowance money (at least until they wised-up and realized they were being ripped-off). Of those movies, "License To Drive" is probably the most watchable of them. The real-life train-wrecks both Corey Feldman & Corey Haim became after they were no longer cute are more interesting stories than anything you'll find here, but I suppose having the DVD has a certain nostalgic value to those who fondly remember their infatuation with these two. And considering there's probably no one on the planet screaming for a special edition of "License To Drive," Anchor Bay still manages to give the movie a great transfer, and include a surprising amount of useful extras.
