Review

The popular CSI series expands again to "The Big Apple" with another dynamic cast and sharing the spotlight with modern forensic science. Gary Sinise stars as Mac Taylor, head of the Crime Investigations unit. Joining him in the cast is well known television actress Melina Kanakaderas, and a young cast featuring Eddie Cahill, Vanessa Ferlito, Sheldon Hill Harper and Carmine Giovinazzo. They make up a well rounded team of investigators into the crimes of the city.
In the first episode, investigators from CSI Miami arrive and work with the New York team. This pilot episode is also included in Season Two of CSI Miami. The same successful formula is applied to CSI NY as with the other two CSI series, with subplots involving members of the cast. Most prominantly is the emotional stability of Mac, who has lost his wife in the 9-11 tragedy. We see him going to the site at the end of the first episode to mourn his loss and throughout the season his co-workers try to empathize with him. His chief sidekick, Kanakaderas, mothers him from time to time. While they like each other, there is no hint of romance between these characters.
Episodes deal with a number of brutal deaths and attacks and once again, forensic science manages to take the spotlight on most shows to solve the crime. One excellent episode involves the viewer with keen observation as Sinise drops by a neighborhood diner off duty in time to witness a shooting, which pulls the audience deep into what was seen. What's great about all the CSI series is the way small details become important to solving the cases. "Tanglewood" is another great episode dealing with turf wars in and around New York neighborhoods. When a young wannabe gang member is iced, the team goes in but finds the neighborhood entrenched in gang tradition, so much so that investigator Aiden (Venessa Ferlito), who is one tough cookie, just barely manages to escape without being hurt by hoods.

Picture and Sound

The series is shot in widescreen and owners of home theaters will love the 16X9 picture. Shots of New York and all its grittiness are played up in photography. We get the same formulated overhead shots of the city and a number of New York locales are featured in the shows. Sound is also Dolby 5.1 or 2.0 surround and is excellent in sonics for home theater owners.

Extras

The disc set comes in a cardboard slipcase, one step above the rather cheapo plastic flaps provided by the other CSI disc sets. A paper booklet gives a brief synopisis of each episode on each disc. The seven disc set has all 24 episodes (including the CSi Miami pilot) plus an extras disc of features. That disc includes interviews with cast members about their characters, a special feature on forensic science, a set tour, and a feature on the world's largest crime scene, New York. It will keep you busy for another couple hours after viewing the series. Audio commentaries are provided from directors, producers, writers and cast members on 7 episodes, which you can turn on at the beginning of an episode.

Summary

CSI:NY has a tough time following up on two other hit shows with basically the same formula but manages to keep its own unique perspective with a strong cast and locations. I wonder how long it will be before the audiences either tire of the series formula or if the series will keep expanding until there is a CSI for every major city in America. Something's got to give sooner or later but in the meantime, enjoy these well written and acted dramas.

Universal's Franchise Collection is a pretty cool idea...take a once-popular film series that doesn't really deserve the gigantic boxed set or special edition treatment, slap all the movies on a couple of two-sided discs and release them at a relatively low-price. The Airport Terminal Pack is a perfect example. None of these movies are classics, but they do have their share of fans. Disaster movies were cash cows in the 70s, so from a historical perspective, this fun collection is indispensable, chronicling the rise and fall of an often dubious genre that arguably began with Airport and effectively ended with The Concorde - Airport '79.
