Review

Everyone's favorite night time soap has finally arrived on DVD and it brings back fond memories of a gripping television drama that had everyone talking about it. They mostly talked about the seedy character J. R., played with relish by Larry Hagman, who up until this show major claim to fame had been playing opposite Barbara Eden in "I Dream Of Jeannie" and as Henry Fonda's translator in "Fail-Safe". With this role, Hagman became an icon for greed, lust and power. Joining him was Jim Davis, a veteran actor of many westerns of the fifties and sixties, Patrick Duffy, who had been a "Man From Atlantis" in an earlier television gig, Linda Gray as the alcoholic and uptight Mrs. JR, , Charlene Tilton as the slutty adoptee to the Ewings, Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie, the family matriarch, Steve Kanaly as the ranch foreman Ray, and Victoria Principal, who married into this lovely family.
Schemes start right off as Pam (Victoria Principal) and Bobby (Patrick Duffy) get hitched and return to Southfork for their honeymoon. Pam soon learns that she is anything but welcome by anyone except Ma Ewing and before the hour of the pilot is up things are already spinning into many different sub-plots, which started an entire trend in television in the 80's. Plots are much too complicated to explain in this small space but the entire idea is JR is one mean son of a gun and will stop at nothing to get more power and money, including betraying his own family members. He immediately starts to hatch a scheme to break up Pam and Bobby, while Pam fights back, with the help of her brother. Things pick up even more in the second season, with more schemes and emotional episodes, including JR. plots to smear Pam, the return of missing family members, Jock's illness, and Sue Ellen getting pregnant. It is a wild ride!

Picture and Sound

The fullscreen picture is in pretty good shape for an older series, with a few dust specks and faded colors. The picture is not as sharp as on some transfers I've seen so it rates a B. Sound is mono, which is ok for television watching through a small speaker set but not very satisfying in a home theater, as all the sound comes through the front center channel.

Extras

Included on some episodes is commentary from creator David Jacobs, and cast members Charlene Tilton and Larry Hagman. The extras also include a special reunion from SoapNet with Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Charlene Tilton and Larry Hagman. What I'd like to see in future sets is maybe a Ewing family tree or some other interactive features that make you keep track of all the sub plots. Some trivia questions would also be highly entertaining for fans.

Summary

All the sleaze you want from JR and family starts out with this six disc set that is sure to be a hit with the shows fans. It will always be king of the night time soaps and the show's evolution is legendary. Stay tuned!
