Review

"Dan In Real Life" is an overly sentimental "feel good movie" that is predictable in every way. Skip it and watch "40 Year Old Virgin" for the hundredth time instead.
The story: Dan (a widowed father) and his three daughters take their yearly trip to visit the family. While staying at his parents, he accidentally winds up falling for his brother's girlfriend Marie. Things get even worse for Dan when trouble arises with his daughters. Can Dan pull himself together? What will happen with him and Marie?

If "Dan In Real Life" sounds overly familiar, that's because there isn't a single original scene in the film. 'Dan' is your basic family story in which the main character struggles to find himself before arriving at a happy ending. As if that wasn't enough to put you off, screenwriters Peter Hedges and Pierce Gardner throw in plenty of coincidental moments and obvious plot devices that you know will come back into play down the road.

The cast is basically the only saving grace for the film. Steve Carrell's character is somewhat of an unlikeable ass in the film, but he plays the part well. I do wish he'd pick better roles though. He needs to do more films like "40 Year Old Virgin" and "Little Miss Sunshine" instead of this Hollywood junk. Juliette Binoche is the best here and she has an undeniable chemistry with Carrell. I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but even Dane Cook is decent here as he isn't screaming lame jokes or running around like an idiot. Perhaps there is hope for him.

Picture and Sound

The 1.85:1 widescreen picture quality is as high quality a DVD release that you can find.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is equally worthy of praise, even if the audio consists mostly of people shouting in your ear.
