Review

Given its concept, it was inevitable that a show like "Dharma & Greg" wouldn't be very good for very long. And, of course, it wasn't. But the first season is definitely a charmer, taking the old 'opposites attract' adage to sometimes hilarious levels. Hence, this 3-disc set of Season 1 is worth picking up.
Dharma (Jenna Elfman, in a star-making role) is a free-spirited woman raised by parents (Mimi Kennedy & Alan Richins, the latter of whom steals every scene he's in) who obviously lived the 60s to their fullest, while Greg (Thomas Gibson), a successful U.S. attorney, was brought up with a silver spoon in his mouth by his ultra-conservative folks (Susan Sullivan & Mitchell Ryan, both of whom are hilariously uptight). Dharma & Greg have a chance meeting, and end up getting married less than a day after meeting. This doesn't sit well with any of the parents, especially Greg's. Much of the humor mined from this scenario comes from the total culture clash whenever the parents meet, as well as Dharma & Greg still struggling to get to know each other, even though they're married. Obviously, for a show like this, the premise can't be sustained forever (later seasons fell into typical sitcom doldrums), but kudos must be given to the writers for at least putting together a pretty solid first season. Even so, the earliest episodes of Season One are still the best ones. The pilot is easily one of the more charming and amusing of any 90s-era show you can think of, and the likable performances all around make it hard to resist. The same goes for several of the subsequent episodes when the parents finally meet, and bicker over how to give Dharma & Greg an 'appropriate' wedding ceremony.

Picture and Sound

Both the picture and sound of this set are strictly perfunctory. They do the job of presenting the show more-or-less how they originally premiered, but nothing more. The image is 1.33:1 fullscreen, with decent color, and the sound is rendered in simple Dolby Stereo.

Extras

A small smattering of extras are included, such as audio commentary by Elfman, Kennedy & Rachins for 3 episodes (including the pilot), post-show vanity cards with commentary by co-creator Chuck Lorre, and a fairly boring "Reaching Your Inner Dharma" game.

Summary

Nothing lasts forever, and in the case of "Dharma & Greg", the show's quality didn't last long at all. But the first season was, and still is, funny and charming, featuring a great cast working with clever scripts that mine its premise for all it's worth. Recommended.

Stalag 17 - Collector's Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
Even after 53 years, Billy Wilder's classic is still one of the best blends of wartime drama and clever comedy ever made. Though I personally think "The Great Escape" is the definitive P.O.W. escape film, "Stalag 17" is still funny, dramatic and suspenseful enough to warrant repeated viewings. This Collector's Edition DVD includes a great transfer, as well as some pretty great bonus features, making it well-worth having in any serious movie fan's collection.

Movie Quotes

Well, I've wrestled with reality for thirty-
five years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I
finally won out over it.
