Review

Of all the DVD releases that come out each year, I most look forward to "Doctor Who" titles. While each of the classic episodes aren't released as frequently as fans would like, I have to hand it to the BBC for taking the time to remaster each and every episode while also including boat loads of extras. Of course, not every episode is going to please fans like myself. "Time-Flight" is one of those eps.
The story: After a Concorde plane disappears into thin air, the 5th Doctor (played by Peter Davison), Nyssa, Tegan, and a group of pilots find themselves transported to the prehistoric era. After some investigating, the Doctor finds that an alien named Kalid is behind the disappearances. But who is Kalid and what are his motives? While "Time-Flight" contains a few pleasant treats for fans, such as quick glimpses of Adric, the Melkur, and the return of a major foe, the episode is ruined by a truly abysmal script. Without giving away spoilers to those who haven't seen this story, the script simply rushes everything. The mourning over Adric is glossed over at the start, the plot behind Kalid's motives is underdeveloped, Tegan stands around and whines, and worst of all...the script does not even capitalize on the idea of being in a prehistoric land. We don't even see a dinosaur or any sort of creature. The entire episode is a wasted opportunity.

Picture and Sound

The 4:3 fullscreen picture quality may not be the best as it was shot on video tape. However, "Time-Flight" (along with all of the episodes) have been digitally remastered and look as as sharp as they possibly can. The Dolby Digital Mono track is clear. I don't have any complaints.

Extras

* Doctor Who Series 2 ad, radio times listings, photo gallery, Doctor Who Annual 1983 (on DVD-ROM), and "The Time Warrior" DVD trailer. * 3 deleted/extended scenes that were understandably cut. * A quick 4 minute interview with screenwriter Peter Grimwade. * Tegan fans will get a kick out of a 13 1/2 minute featurette on Tegan titled "Mouth On Legs." Actress Janet Fielding talks about her character and complains about her outfits, hair, etc. * 14 minutes of outtakes in which the actors and actresses mess up on their lines. * A 19 1/2 minute extra titled "Jurassic Larks" which shows the crew shooting on studio sets and various behind the scenes shots. * Info text- Viewers have the option to play an info text during the entire episode. The text gives viewers a bundle of facts and trivia about the episode, actors, etc. * A commentary track with Peter Davison, Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton, and Eric Saward. The group talk about filming on a Concorde plane and playfuly bash the episode and the lack of companion characterization.

Summary

As a big "Doctor Who" fan, it saddens me to say that "Time-Flight" is one of the few episodes that I can't recommend buying. Skip this one and pick up a classic Davison episode like "Earthshock" or "The Five Doctors."

A Christmas Carol

Category: DVD Reviews
There is no better way to spend the holiday than to watch this beautiful adaptation of Scrooge, with Alistair Sim in the lead role. This DVD, brought to us by VCI Entertainment and The Roan Group was produced from the original black and white 35 mm negative. It is a holiday treasure.
