Review

This film, touted as "in the classic Hitchcock tradition" are hard to fill and while it is a suspenseful thriller, it can be compared to Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much, as it involves a family desperately trying to get their kidnapped child back. Starring Michael Douglas, Oliver Platt, Famke Janssen, Jennifer Esposito, Brittany Murphy and Sean Bean, the thriller is gripping from the opening flashback.
Douglas plays a psychiatrist who is brought in to treat a disturbed young girl who years earlier saw her father murdered by his jewel thief partners when he double crossed them. The thieves are back and kidnap Douglas's young daughter in order for Douglas to obtain information from the teenage girl he is treating (Brittany Murphy). Douglas must deal with the kidnappers, his immobile wife (Famke Janssen), and the girl, who plays psychological games with him. Elements that build on the suspense include the attack of Janssen in their home by a knife wielding member of the gang, the psychological elements of the kidnap victim and her captors, the relationship of Douglas and Murphy, as he slowly convinces her to help him, and the dramatic and thrilling climax to the film. Sean Bean is ruthless in his pursuit of his goal and is just as crazed as he was in "Patriot Games". Brittany Murphy puts in a marvelous performance as the teen who vividly recollects her father's death with Douglas, as he tries to pry from her a six digit number that the crooks want. Jennifer Esposito plays a hard boiled New York cop detective, stunningly beautiful but also all business on the job.

Extras

Director Gary Fleder provides commentary on one audio track and another audio track contains commentary on specific scenes by actors Douglas, Murphy, Sean Bean, Famke Jenssen and Oliver Platt. The disc also contains deleted scenes (although somewhat short), featurettes on making the film, a set tour, and film scoring. We also get a view of screening room dailies, a storyboard to screen comparison feature, cast and crew bios, and the Brittany Murphy screen test. A very handsome set of extras for the single disc.

Summary

Those looking for a first class thriller need look no further than this disc. It has enough suspenseful elements and psychological twists and turns to keep you on the edge from the beginning, great characterization and performances from the cast, and is loaded with extras.

After several years of squandering his talent directing crap like "Annie," "Victory" and "Phobia," the late, great John Huston finally returned to greatness in the mid-eighties with a trio of outstanding films, "Under the Volcano," "The Dead" and "Prizzi's Honor," the last of which ranks among his best work. It's a wickedly amusing black comedy, with sharp direction, an outstanding script, and great performances by the entire cast. This DVD release from MGM improves on the picture quality of the original Anchor Bay release, but unfortunately, it's sadly lacking in extra features.
