Review

The 7th season of “Dragonball Z” is better left unseen.

Season seven shifts gears by not focusing on a major villain and instead focusing on two fighting tournaments (the Other World Tournament and the World Martial Arts Tournament), teen Gohan and his alter ego Saiyaman, and the younger characters (Videl, Goten and Kid Trunks).

The 7th season of “Dragonball Z” is undoubtedly the worst as there is simply not much to like here. Gone are the massive fights or dark story arcs (such as the Android saga). Instead, fans are forced to watch kiddy characters (like Goku’s 2nd son Goten) goof around and fight in a dull tournament. Even worse, we have to see a teenage Gohan in a ridiculous costume and cape masquerading as a hero known as Saiyaman. It was like watching “Teen Titans” mixed with “Degrassi” and that is certainly not what DBZ is supposed to be like.

As if the season wasn’t bad enough, viewers also have to watch episodes about a baby dinosaur named Chobi and a lame, non-threatening loud mouth braggart fighter known as Mr. Satan. In seeing these characters, I actually yearned to see the drawn out fights from previous seasons as they were certainly less painful to watch.

Summary: Unless you have to have every “Dragonball Z” season, I would suggest skipping season seven and instead buying a quality DVD set like season four.

Picture and Sound

The episode transfers are so-so. The widescreen prints contain faded colors, dirt, and jumpy frames.

Funimation has included English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Japanese Dolby Digital Mono audio tracks. The voice recordings and action sounded fine to this reviewer.

Extras

* Funimation trailers for anime series such as “Robotech- The Shadow Chronicles,” “Glass Fleet,” “Tsubasa,” “Black Cat,” and “Samurai 7.”
* Textless songs.

Star Trek-Generations Special Collector's Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
Like millions of other Star Trek fans, you may already own this disc from Paramount and now they are releasing this Special Collector's Edition for a very reasonable price. Those looking for a cleaner picture will be disappointed, as it looks the same as on the original disc. The extras however are worth the price alone.
