Review

"Dragonfly" deals with near death experience and how people can communicate to another level in this state. Starring Kevin Costner and supported by a steller cast including Kathy Bates and Linda Hunt, "Dragonfly" attempts to put itself in the same genre as "Sixth Sense" with eerie plotline and scary situations for the lead actor. However, I found it to be rather mild in the scary department; it certainly doesn't intrigue the way "Sixth Sense" does.
Dr. Joe Darrow (Costner) loses his wife in the opening scene of the film, a victim of a bus accident in a foreign country, where she was working as a doctor. Costner must deal with the death while continuing to work at the hospital. While he is relieved of his emergency room duties by his boss, he continues to see the patients in his wife's cancer ward. It is there that he starts to experience strange messages through the patients. He also has experiences at night in his house, including visions of his wife. While he finds no support from hospital staff, he does get help from his neighbor (Kathy Bates), and a nun (Linda Hunt) who has been asking about near death experiences in the hospital. Eventually, Costner must put together the mystery of the messages and find out exactly what happened to his wife. The ending is fulfilling and original and probably the best part of the film. Acting by Costner is a bit stiff, especially during the opening half of the film. Also Bates and Hunt have very small roles and are really wasted in their parts. Calling this a "supernatural thriller" is a bit much, as stated on the cover. I found the story to be more along the lines of "Ghost" than of "Sixth Sense" or "Unbreakable".

Picture and Sound

Picture-The anamorphic picture was excellent and up to Universal's usual high standards. Many of the scenes are dark as Costner wanders around his house and the photography does an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere without any washout. Contrast and color renditions are very good throughout the film. Sound-DTS and Dolby five channel options are available on the disc which gives a disc a notch up in its rating. Separation of channels is especially distinct and discreet with the DTS option. Of course, the film is supposed to be a thriller so every little sound and sudden shock are amplified by the sound effects and music.

Extras

There are some extended or edited scenes that are presented without narration or final sound. These are rough but always a nice extra. There is also a "Making of Dragonfly" featurette and full length commentary by director Tom Shadyac. Still extras include cast and crew film bios and production notes. Author Betty Eadie speaks about her near death experience which is the most intriguing special feature on the disc. There is also theatrical trailer and DVD-ROM features.

Summary

This film is a good romantic fantasy but not the thriller it is advertised as. While the cast is noteworthy, none of the performances are that memorable. Technical quality on the disc is very high and extras are plentiful. Rent it first.

Kung Fu-Season One

Category: DVD Reviews
The revolutionary western's first season is now available on DVD and this first 15 episode set has its great moments. The unusual main character, a half American, half Chinese is Kwai Chang Caine (David Carradine), who wanders the wild west looking for inner peace among hostile native Americans, harsh prejudice in the dusty towns, and battles people from his homeland who are after him because he killed the Emperor's nephew. Caine has a bounty on his head so he has to keep wandering. It's a great plot for a television series and many people were fascinated with this series when it first hit the tube in 1972. Kung Fu was a revolutionary series in many respects. The series hero is non-violent and carries no gun, and brings his Asian philosophy into focus in each episode through flashbacks of his monk training. Key cast members include many Chinese-American actors that are familiar faces, including Keye Luke as Master Po and Philip Ahn as Master Kan. David Carradine built his career around the series, with his latest film, "Kill Bill Vol.2" his latest Kung Fu expert role.
