Review

This television series stars Kyle Chandler of “Friday Night Lights” the TV adaptation and co-stars Shanesia Davis-Williams and Fisher Stevens. Chandler plays Gary Hobson, a man who receives tomorrow’s newspaper today. Unable to explain this strange phenomenon, Gary uses the newspaper as a sort of crystal ball to either serve humanity or for his own personal gain.

 

“Early Edition” is that TV show that surprisingly ran for four seasons. I remember watching the first episode and a hand full of others from the first season and then I stopped. I don’t remember why or what show replaced it, but I then recall some years later being surprised to find out that it was still on. I don’t mean that in a bad way, the concept was amusing and it got me hooked for a while, but for some reason I just didn’t stick with it. I think I was hoping it would be more like “Quantum Leap,” it essentially was, a few plot points were different. And so every episode I was waiting for Fisher Stevens to be holding a calculator sized device and begin referring to someone named Ziggy in a Dean Stockwell like drone. But it never happened.

I’m not bashing “Early Edition” whatsoever, re-watching the first season on DVD was actually fun. Fans of the television series will definitely need to add this to their collection. It’s been a long time coming and I am now proud to have it next to my “Quantum Leap” box sets.

Picture was sadly lacking. It was grainy, but I may be spoiled by all the great television that is now in HD.

E. B.White wrote three childrens books; "Charlotte's Web", "Stuart Little", and "Trumpet Of The Swan". "Swan" is the the sleeper of the bunch and now comes to home video as an animated tale for children. I am very familiar with the book, having read it to my own children and comparisons with the original were on my mind as I viewed this animated film. The film has a talented and well known voice cast; Reese Witherspoon, Jason Alexander, Seth Green, Mary Steenburgen, Carol Burnett, and Joe Mantegna.
