Review

The same inept team who thrilled undemanding 12-year-olds with such so-called "parodies" as "Scary Movie" & "Date Movie" now present their latest insult to the intelligence of anyone with an I.Q. over 80. It's ironic that such a truly clever satire as Mike Judge's "Idiocracy" is unceremoniously dumped into less than 10 theaters before being regulated to home video, while "Epic Movie" is given a massive release, and manages to collect $20 million during its opening weekend. The fact that it mostly parodies movies released within the last year also means "Epic Movie" has to be one of the fastest greenlit projects since "When Justin Met Kelly." And it shows. This juvenile & slap-dash piece of junk makes "Scary Movie" look as clever as "Dr. Strangelove."
Nearly all of the blame can be placed at the feet of directors Jason Friedberg & Aaron Seltzer, whose idea of parody is mostly recreating scenes from movies they're supposedly making fun of, then adding obscenities, sex jokes & gross-out gags. But simply having Willy Wonka breakdancing or buxom female pirates soap themselves up (both to a techno-hip-hop beat) isn't satire...it's just gratuitously stupid. For real parody to work, it takes the cliches of a genre and exploits them with a totally straight face, like "Airplane" did so many years ago (and still better than anyone else). "Epic Movie" doesn't even try to satirize the so-called epics it emulates. And as further evidence everyone involved in the film is utterly clueless, the movie has the audacity to try and poke fun at films that are ALREADY satires (such as "Borat" & "Nacho Libre"). Here, it's 90 minutes of an awful (and shamelessly mugging) cast dropped into scenes we're familiar with, and we're expected to laugh simply because we're aware of the movies those scenes are lifted from. The only reason the movie doesn't earn an 'F' is because it might possibly babysit some of the 12-year-olds it obviously caters to. But even then, the film's estimation of (and basic contempt for) its target audience's intelligence is painfully obvious. For everyone else, "Epic Movie" is a laughless endurance test.

Picture and Sound

The disc we reviewed is a promotional screener, and as such, the transfer of the actual retail copy may differ. The movie is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and I guess it looks pretty good. Overall, the colors appear accurate, though the image looks a bit soft at times. The soundtrack, rendered in 5.1 Dolby Digital, fares better, though there isn't all that much creative balance. The sound rendering is on par with any made-for-TV disc you've ever heard.

Extras

There are a bunch of extras, but most of them are further attempts at juvenile humor, and seldom any funnier than the movie itself. The directors offer an audio commentary, and after watching the film, you might be tempted to check it out just to marvel at what they consider funny. Another audio feature allows you to watch the movie with additional belch & fart noises, which goes to show you that even the extras are aimed at juveniles (and the juvenile at-heart). For the most part, aside from the commentary, anyone actually curious about the making of the movie will be let down.

Summary

Humorless, brainless & ultimately pointless, "Epic Movie" is the kind of movie that will either appeal to kids or the same folks Mike Judge's "Idiocracy" makes fun of. But most viewers weaned on classics like "Airplane" will marvel at how bad it is, and maybe be a bit insulted at the obvious utter contempt it shows for the intelligence of its audience. But maybe that's a good thing...perhaps it'll inspire someone to make a movie that parodies Friedberg & Seltzer's parody movies. They couldn't do any worse. Not recommended.

Horror

Category: DVD Reviews
Have you been wondering what The Amazing Kreskin has been up to lately? Me neither. But here he is, the most recognizable name in the cast of this bizarre and surreal horror film by director Dante Tomaselli, who has earn a bit of a cult following after his first feature, "Desecration." His follow-up, "Horror," is similar in look and feel, with a seemingly non-existent plot used to link numerous scenes of surreal terror. While the film wavers between being artistic and amateurish, chilling and laughable, it nevertheless contains some well-directed set-pieces and truly eerie imagery, playing like a 77 minute nightmare from which you can't awake. Just don't try to make much sense out of it.
