Review

"Family Guy" for me is a staple for Sunday evenings, yet if you are twenty something you probably work odd jobs and thus odd hours which entail you not to be home for the Sunday night Fox adult cartoon blitz. Short of renting a DVR-Recorder from your local cable company there wasn't much of a chance to see the quick witted humor of Seth McFarlane and crew every week in "Family Guy". Thanks to Fox Home Entertainment pseudo-grown-ups everywhere are now able to watch in full, minus the commercials.
Culminating in a fourth, and subsequently better, animated volume, "Family Guy: Volume Four" allows the viewer to watch, in stunning detail, the brash and almost obscene weekly episodes that the John Q. Public has come to love. In these new episodes "Family Guy" bashes the FCC, tackles Catholic Dogma, and insults the Porn industry, if the latter could even be insulted. As previously done by other seasons, Volume Four was not to be out done by holding back its views on so-called "racy" subjects. "Family Guy" has become renowned for using satire mixed with early "generation X" references to offend, titillate , and blur the lines of family wholesomeness in America. Even though I as a viewer loved the new volume, I found myself questioning time-filled singing shorts that seem to be more frequent in every new season. Maybe this is a new way of penciling in social commentary, yet with the apparent disconnect of""Family Guy's" plot you will probably come to the same conclusion I had, which was the fast forward button of my remote! Don't get me wrong... I love the unattached humor that has become "Family Guy?, but one may need to mention to Mr. McFarlane that the "Simpsons" accomplished this feat by sparingly making a 'singing' episode every two years or so.

Picture and Sound

Having just upgraded to an HD television I may be spoiled, yet the animation and color is flawless, with almost a perfect transfer from television; you will be pleased with the crisp color and neat lines of high quality animation. The sound is superb with nothing lacking, and you really come away with thinking that the cartoon cells are right in your television set.

Extras

Along with DVD-ROM access to "Family Guy's" website there is the usual commentary with the directors and a multi-angle scene study. There is also a brief special feature menu on the third disk which will let you know how hard animation directing and production is.

Summary

Better animation coupled with great subject matter has come together for the fans of "Family Guy". If you like the television show, then this DVD is a must in anyone's collection.
