Review

"Fatal Attraction" is a cultural phenomena, with vast social implications that still reverberate today. Glenn Close and Michael Douglas star in this love affair that turns deadly. Directed by Adrian Lyne, this film is brought to disc by Paramount with a lot of extras and commentary from Lyne himself.
Attorney Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) has a brief but high energy affair with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close) but later considers the affair a mistake; especially after Close gets a bit too possessive and he begins to see the dark side of Alex. However, Close won't go away that easily and starts to invade his own personal territory, including visits to his home and calling at all hours. The harassment escalates until there is one final showdown between the two that leads to tragedy. Lyne skillfully shows Alex's character as an insecure product of sexual abuse and Close's performance is the most powerful of her career. The ending to the film is one that was reshot after audiences reacted badly to the first ending which is included in this special edition DVD. You can be the judge which ending you like best.

Picture and Sound

Picture-The widescreen enhanced picture is beautifully preserved on the DVD without any flaws. The muted colors reflect the mood of the story. Alex's apartment is located in a bleak part of town. One scene has Douglas leaving the apartment and you can see the loneliness of the location, which totally goes along with her character. The sexual scenes are hot and full of energy. Douglas' quiet struggle with the guilt of the affair are perfectly portrayed in his conversations with his wife Anne Archer, and his young family. When he finally tells his wife about the affair, it is explosive. Sound-A Dolby 5.1 soundtrack is standard on the DVD, along with a 2 channel track. The sound is mostly centered in front, with some occasional sound information delegated to the surround speakers. The music by Maurice Jarre hauntingly reflects the story in scenes.

Extras

A new documentary was created for the disc titled "Forever Fatal: Remembering Fatal Attraction" with interviews with stars, the director and producers Stanley Jaffe and Sherry Lansing. It is an hour long, intelligent look at the film and its social implications along with the history of the film. Shorter features also shot at the same time are titled "Social Attraction" which addresses the cultural phenomenon of the film, and "Visual Attraction" which features behind the scenes production recollections. There is a short amount of rehearsal footage of Close first saying the famous " I'm not going to be ignored" line from the film, and the much heralded alternate ending with commentary from Adrian Lyne. Lyne also does a full feature commentary on a separate audio track.

Summary

Paramount did an excellent job in producing this DVD of "Fatal Attraction", which is an important film in many ways. Besides an excellent picture sound, it has included extras worthy of the film and fans of the film will not want to miss this edition.

Demon Hunter

Category: DVD Reviews
"Demon Hunter" is sort of a low-rent "Constantine," if you can imagine such a thing. Unlike the Keanu Reeves epic, this one plays like a TV pilot with boobs, and despite its obvious low budget, it's kind of fun at times, and mercifully short. As usual, Anchor Bay gives this a better DVD presentation than it probably warrants.
