FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF begins less with a case of the stomach flu and more of a nasty bout of senioritis for wily high school senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick, WARGAMES).  Along with his hypochondriac best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck, TWISTER) and sassy girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara, LEGEND), Ferris blows off school and takes the city of Chicago by storm.  While his parents (Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward) are a cinch to outwit, the truth behind Ferris’ lies are hunted down mercilessly by Dean of Students Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones, HOWARD THE DUCK) and Ferris’ own sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey, DIRTY DANCING).

Random recognizable faces in this 80’s classic include Edie McClurg (BACK TO SCHOOL) as Rooney’s hair-sprayed secretary Grace, Charlie Sheen (RED DAWN) in a strangely foretelling role in a police station, Ben Stein (THE MASK) as a monotone high school economics teacher, Kristy Swanson (PRETTY IN PINK) as a ditzy blonde, Max Perlich (BORN YESTERDAY) in his feature film debut, and Louie Anderson (COMING TO AMERICA) as a flower delivery guy.

FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF is a film fully committed to its 80’s roots that will always be enjoyed by its original fans.  But don’t expect teens these days to take this film to heart and embrace it the way you might have as a teenager.  With his lack of cell phone and shiny computer technology (although he does own an awesome synthesizer), Ferris must rely on his wits and that little bit of magic he possesses for being able to get out of the most ridiculous scrapes just in the nick of time.  FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF is an innocent, fun-loving picture by the man who defined the 80’s teen flick genre.

Picture and Sound

The widescreen picture is a brilliant showcase for DP Tak Fujimoto’s work. The Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is also very good.

Extras

* As with every DVD in the “I Love the 80’s” collection, disc comes with a “Limited Edition CD” featuring four (and only four, and the same four in every disc) songs. Lips Like Sugar by Echo & the Bunnymen, Chains of Love by Erasure, Need You Tonight by INXS, and Take on Me by ah-ha.
* Feature Commentary by Director John Hughes. Nobody knows this movie better than Hughes, the quintessential writer/director for 80’s teen flicks, and his commentary rolls through the film from beginning to end. Hughes’ topics of discussion range all over the place from the movie’s ties to THE BREAKFAST CLUB, highlights of Chicago, getting the rights to the STAR WARS theme, and crashing a Chicagoland parade.

Apocalypto

Category: DVD Reviews
You gotta hand it to Mel Gibson...he's a guy who truly knows what to do with all his Hollywood clout. It's obvious he doesn't give a rat's ass if the films he directs (which he mostly finances himself) appeal to mainstream audiences. Yet, at the same time, Gibson has repeatedly managed to create audience pictures of mass appeal from material usually aimed at the art-house crowd. After "Braveheart" & "The Passion of the Christ," "Apocalypto" may seem slightly less emotionally wrenching, but still has much of the same visceral intensity, and a similar narrative structure to the latter.

Movie Quotes

Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it
doesn't take much to see that the problems
of three little people don't amount to a
hill of beans in this crazy world.

Humphrey Bogart
