Review

Fans of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," who've been mourning the show's untimely death for almost 10 years, can now find a bit of comfort in the fact that Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett & Kevin Murphy are back as The Film Crew. There's no Tom Servo, Gypsy, Crow or Clayton Forrester, but other than that, it's business as usual, with the three of them (this time as themselves) offering witty off-screen commentary to bad films, with the usual quota of obscure pop culture references.
The gist of these direct-to-DVD series is that Nelson, Corbett & Murphy are appointed to provide audio commentaries for every movie that still doesn't have one. For their DVD debut, they've chosen a doozy, a phenomenally inept 1968 sexploitation flick called "Hollywood After Dark," featuring a young Rue McClanahan as a emotionally troubled stripper (and, yes, we get to see her in action). Some longtime "MST3K" fans will undoubtedly lament the absence of that show's concept (and its beloved robots), especially during the periodic sketches; unlike the original series, "The Film Crew" only breaks from the movie at the halfway mark for a 'lunch break.' The segments in which we actually see these guys aren't as endearing as when they played robots. But other than that, their commentary of the film is more consistently hilarious than most of the "MST3K" episodes during the show's last few seasons. No longer confined by the content & language restraints of television, they take full advantage of the free reign afforded them here.

Picture and Sound

The picture & sound quality is adequate at best, and not as good as the transfers of some of the "MST3K" discs. Obviously, the quality of the overall image depends largely on whatever film they are watching. The sound quality is especially dubious; I found myself having to crank up the volume to hear these guys.

Extras

Being the debut disc of a potential DVD series, I was kind of hoping for more bonus features, such as the hows and whys of the production. Alas, the only bonus is a two minute spoken word poem by Corbett, "Ode to Lunch." It's kind of funny, but nothing you's sit through more than once.

Summary

The robots may be gone (as are the silhouettes in the lower right hand corner of the screen), but other than that, it's business as usual for these guys. The film they've chosen is wonderfully awful, and their comments about it are hilarious. Perhaps the fact they are no longer do this on a weekly basis will result in more consistently funny discs. Let's hope so. At any rate, this first disc in the series is a winner, and highly recommended.
