Review

As far as American film styles are concerned, film noir has passed the test of time as much as the Western and the slapstick comedy have managed to. Even today, the term is bandied about towards dark crime dramas no matter how glossy or colorful the cinematography is.

Sets like this give fans a rare chance to get a true sense of how noir came into being. Influenced by (or a direct proponent of in many cases) the German expressionist filmmakers, many American directors let shadows creep across the frame, amped up the tension in the dialog and acting, and dared to blur the lines between good and evil.

The five films in this set represent a wide range of noir interpretations. There's the rugged British version, as seen in They Made Me a Fugitive (produced by the ubiquitous Ealing Studios) and Contraband (directed by the fantastic Michael Powell) with stiff upper-lipped male leads added a strange honor to the dark doings they involved themselves in; the moralistic German-by-way-of-Hollywood version as seen through the unflinching eye of Lang (Scarlet Street) and the full-on Hollywood version which features good people mixed up in bad situations (Anthony Mann's fascinating character study Strange Impersonation).

The best film in this set doesn't feel like a noir film, however. Instead, Ida Lupino's The Hitch-hiker feels perhaps even grittier than that, thanks in no small part to the hot, dusty landscapes of Mexico where it takes place and the brutal performance by William Talman. As an itinerate criminal who holds two men hostage in his efforts to escape to a coastal town, Talman tears into each scene with a vicious energy that pulses from the screen like heat waves.

There are other sets that contain the considered classics of this genre, this five disc set fills out the edges nicely, bringing films under the umbrella that might otherwise have gotten passed over.

Picture and Sound

The picture varies from film to film on this set, with most looking a little rough around the edges. Only Scarlet Street really gets a fresh treatment thanks to the transfer having been produced from a 35mm negative.

Brokeback Mountain - Collector's Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
"Brokeback Mountain" is one of those movies that's easier to admire than actually enjoy, especially if you're like me, finally seeing it after being inundated by endless media hype & controversy, not to mention 'homo' variations of the title uttered by snickering co-workers ("Humpback Mountain," "Brokebutt Mountain," etc.) for over a year. It's akin to taking in an edgy art house film: you are impressed with your own open-mindedness, and the movie does provide some fodder for discussion afterwards. But really, "Brokeback Mountain" is a traditional Hollywood love story masquerading as cutting-edge cinema, albeit brilliantly directed and acted; it certainly deserved some of the Oscar trophies it took home. And again, admiring a film for its audacity & technical brilliance is not the same as being entertained. Even as a tragic love story, "Brokeback Mountain" is emotionally aloof and way too long. Still, the movie deservedly has its admirers, and I guess one big question for them is whether or not this 2-disc Collector's Edition is worth the upgrade, especially since this is the same version of the film released on DVD just last year.
