Review

Teen movies. What can I say about them? There have been a few good ones in the last couple of years. Well maybe not good, but entertaining. Nothing like the classic horror films to say the least but good. Scream was released in 1996 with some huge success, which then brought an onslaught of teen-horror films. A year later we had I Know What You Did Last Summer and tons of other movies that tried to scare you. It's a shame that it took 4 years for another good teen-horror flick to come out. And it took a couple of guys best known for their work on TV series (The X-Files, Millennium) to do it.
Final Destination is about a group of high school students who are going on a trip to Paris. But before the plane is able to take off, Alex Browning played by Devon Sawa (Idle Hands), has a premonition that the plane will blow up. He panics, goes crazy, and gets kicked off the plane along with several others of his classmates. The plane blows up and that leaves everyone to believe that Alex had something to do with it, namely the FBI. During the course of the movie, we find out that Alex and his classmates have cheated death, and that means they should have died on the plane but didn't, so death is seeking to kill every last one of them! Director James Wong (The X-Files) does this movie perfectly. Every death is done more different than any movie I have ever seen. This isn't a hack 'em up style movie. Half of the reason is because we don't see death the whole time, which I felt helped make some of the scenes more intense than they might have normally been. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes teen movies or just horror movies in general. It will have you paranoid about your next step for a long while.

Picture and Sound

Picture- What a picture!!! It is absolutely beautiful. It is presented in anamorphic 1.85:1 and boy does it shine. The blacks are rich and deep and the character details come in very clear. Audio- The disc has an English Dolby Digital Track 5.1 and is also very well done. The sounds of the plane exploding just mess up your speakers. It will blow you away after you listen to it. All speakers are used throughout the movie and the dialogue isn't faded out by the special effects either. Another great job by New Line.

Extras

There is a ton of extra content on this disc. First up we have 3 deleted scenes, which includes an alternate ending. The alternate ending is very unusual; it doesn't even come close to the one they finally chose for the film. If this would have been kept in the final cut, most of the people in the audience would have been upset. That leads us to the mini documentary called "A Look at the Test Screenings". This focuses on the marketing for the movie and shows actual audience reactions to the film. Some of them are funny and some of the stuff people wrote down for the filmmakers to read was hilarious as well. The second featurette is called "Premonitions". This looks at a California housewife who uses her physic abilities to investigate crime victims and other murder cases. This is a very interesting feature and has a very chilling feel to it. We have 3 commentary tracks. The first one is from James Wong, writer/producer Glen Morgan, editor James Coblentz, and writer Jeffrey Reddick. This is a very interesting track as they discuss the making of the movie and some informative tidbits about the cast and other things. The second commentary is by actors Devon Sawa, Kerr Smith, Chad E. Donella and Kristen Cloke. They seemed to have fun doing this commentary as well as the movie. Heard a lot of good things about the making of it as well as the filmmakers. The last one is of the score done by composer Shirley Walker. There is some more stuff though. Like the original theatrical trailer. It is presented in 1.85:1 ratio and looks just as good as the movie itself. Last we have two interactive games. One calculates when you will die (If you really want to know), and then we have a game to see how psychic you are. The last thing is the Cast and Crew biographies.

Summary

Once again New Line has produced a great DVD. For any fan of the genre, this is a must have. The movie is brilliant and really makes you watch your next step because it might be your last. The video, audio, and extras are also great and make this a must buy for anyone looking to start collecting DVD's.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season Seven

Category: DVD Reviews
Buffy's last season is a big one with the baddies moving things up a notch. Productions values were higher for this season as Buffy must find a way to defeat The First; which is evil incarnate. Joining Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy are the cast that has been there throughout the other seasons; Nicholas Brendon as Xander, Alyson Hannigan as Willow, Emma Caufield as Anya, Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn , James Marsters as Spike, and Anthony Stewart Head as Giles. Guest appearances by former cast members including David Boreanaz pop up now and then in the hour episodes but it is Buffy and her friends who the story revolves around.

finally won out over it.
