Review

Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are together again in a film that could have been titled “How To Get Your Ex Back in 10 Days By Going on a Treasure Hunt.” In fact, that was probably the pitch meeting.


FOOL’S GOLD follows put-together Tess (Hudson) and slacker Ben (McConaughey) as the recently divorced couple reunites to hunt down a long-lost Spanish treasure. The same treasure hunt that ruined their marriage, in fact. But this time Ben may have actually found the real thing. They are aided by a wealthy philanthropist (Donald Sutherland, PRIDE & PREJUDICE) and his tabloid-bound socialite daughter (Alexis Dziena, SEX AND BREAKFAST). Hindered by a rapper named Bigg Bunny who also wants to get his hands on the loot, Tess and Ben must team up with another group of treasure hunters headed by former colleague Moe (Ray Winstone, THE DEPARTED) if they want to come out on the other side of this adventure together and in one piece.

There are on-screen couplings that have more to offer in the way of chemistry, but both Hudson and McConaughey are not entirely devoid of their own brand of charm. McConaughey especially seems more suited to Ben’s unkempt, shirtless slacker persona than the suit-and-tie ad exec Ben he portrayed in HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS. (And, yes, his character had the same name in both films.) All in all, this action-adventure-romantic-comedy proves that too many hyphenates in the mix tends to water down anything that might lend the film the oomph it needs to rise above mediocre.

* Flirting With Adventure. Interviews with cast and crew about the chemistry and dynamic between stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.
* Gag Reel. Calling it a “gag reel” implies a level of hilarity not found in this extra. Consists mostly of rehearsal flubs and outtakes filmed from what looks like a second unit camera or on-set documentary camera. This bit is disappointingly un-funny.
* Trailers for THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2, GET SMART’S BRUCE AND LLOYD: OUT OF CONTROL, and MAMA’S BOY.

Maybe it's because I just sat through "Catwoman" that I thought "Elektra" was better than a lot of critics did. And maybe it's because I'd rather watch Jennifer Garner kick ass in a tight red leather outfit than Ben Affleck, but I also enjoyed it more than "Daredevil" (from which "Elektra" is a spin off). Whatever the case, while I'm glad I didn't go pay nine bucks to catch it in theaters, as comic book super hero movies go, I've seen a lot worse.
