Review

A group of American students arrives in Paris to study French language and culture for one year.  There’s Joel (Miles Chapin, HAIR), a sheltered and studious kind of kid who seems more interested in watching French-dubbed reruns of “STAR TREK” than experiencing life in the City of Lights.  Joel’s roommate, Alex (David Marshall Grant, “THIRTYSOMETHING”, in his feature film debut) is less interested in studying and more interested in letting Paris awaken him to life’s experiences in order to find inspiration for his songwriting.  Finally, there’s Laura (Blanche Baker, SIXTEEN CANDLES), whose obsession with visiting every important landmark in and around Paris could just drive her to the brink of madness.


FRENCH POSTCARDS is a coming of age tale about awakening in a new world and shedding innocence, facing difficult decisions and choosing a path in life.

According to the back of the DVD case, Debra Winger supposedly “charms” in the film, but is little more than an extra with a few lines here and there.  The case also advises to “watch for a star turn” by Mandy Patinkin (THE PRINCESS BRIDE).  Patinkin is quite funny as Sayyid, an Iranian travel agent who accompanies Laura on a trip to a festival.  But his “star turn” is only a few minutes of on-screen time, and the comedy in his performance turns decidedly uncomfortable when Sayyid attacks Laura in a hotel room and leaves her unconscious.

FRENCH POSTCARDS loses what little focus it had in the last 30 minutes as the filmmakers scramble to tie up all of the loose ends.  Probably good enough for its era, POSTCARDS has since been outstripped in poignancy and accomplished storytelling by films like BROKEN ENGLISH, 2 DAYS IN PARIS, and – I can’t believe I’m saying this – even LE DIVORCE.

Another great classic Hitchcock release from Universal is presented for our pleasure. Universal has loaded this disc with lots of extras and have restored the picture to pristine condition. The film stars Rod Taylor and Tippi Hedren, who play a cat and mouse game of love and fascination for the first part of the story. Filmed in San Francisco and Bodega Bay, the scenery is gorgeous. Also in the cast are Jessica Tandy, as the judgmental mother, a young Suzanne Pleshette as the smoking school teacher ( now you know where she got that low, sexy voice) and a very young Veronica Cartwright.
