Review

George Benson brings his unique jazz guitar and singing style to a live crowd in Belfast, Northern Ireland for this incredible representation of his musical works with some added bonuses.
George is joined by the BBC Big Band, members of the Ulster Orchestra and his own group with guest star Joe Samples for an outstanding evening concert at Waterfront Hall in Belfast. He warms up the crowd with a group of Big Band arrangements of the songs "All Of Me", "I Only Have Eyes For You", and "Beyond The Sea". These all feature George's singing talent straight up with the Big Band musicians. He returns with his own smaller group for a set of his best known songs, which feature not only his great singing talent but also his jazz guitar playing, which is one of the best in the business. The numbers for this part of the program include: "Deeper Than You Think", with keyboards by Joe Samples, "Hipping The Hop", "Lately", "The Ghetto", "In Your Eyes", "Moody's Mood", and his own arrangement of "Danny Boy". His biggest hits follow with solid performances of "This Masquerade", "Breezin'", "Love x Love", "Turn Your Love Around", "Never Give Up On A Good Thing", and "Give Me The Night". He concludes the 90 minute concert with his monster hit, "On Broadway". Benson's well known vocals are all in fine form as he vocalizes and scats to various tunes. It is a solid performance from start to finish and shows off Benson's very professional musicianship.

Picture and Sound

Picture-The concert is presented in widescreen, enhanced for 16x9 television, a real plus for a concert DVD. The videotaped performance is bright and clear, with sharp details. The cameras work well with the music, giving a variety of angles and enough variety of shots to keep the concert interesting and intimate. Sound-The Dolby 5.1 sound is clearly front balanced and very little information is discreetly separated into the rear channels for the concert. The sound is dynamically clean and well mixed for a true concert hall sound. A PCM soundtrack is also provided in the Audio options.

Extras

One of the few DVD concert discs to include a "Making of featurette", the DVD has a 20 minute special with rehearsal scenes, interviews with band members and Benson himself , who comments on the concert, its preparation, the trip to Belfast, and his musical background. It is a very enlightening look at the entertainer. The DVD also includes about ten photographs in a gallery, and biography and discography notes on Benson. It's great to see these extras included on a concert DVD.

Summary

For fans of Benson, this is the disc for you. It will also appeal to lovers of jazz everywhere. The concert is a solid performance showing Benson in top form, as he goes through all of his hits and other popular numbers. The extras included give this DVD added value. Pioneer Home Video continues to release quality concerts in the DVD format.
