Review

David Mamet's powerful screenplay made this film already a winner and with the addition of an incredibly talented cast this film, now ten years old, becomes a modern classic. Starring the great Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin (in a part written in for the film), Ed Harris, Al Pacino, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey, this entertaining ensemble piece is simply a masterpiece of drama.
The film delves into the lives surrounding a real estate firm set in New York. The chief characters all have their own story to tell in the 100 minute film, chiefly that of the Lemmon character, who has been on top and has now lost his touch. Kevin Spacey plays the office manager, and Al Pacino is the successful man of the month. The Baldwin role starts the drama off with a rousing "brass balls " speech not to be forgotten. Alan Arkin and Ed Harris are men who have been in the business but question the sales tactics of the office. The script is tightly written and fast paced. The film is rated "R" for "colorful" language, which is used liberally throughout the film. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play and is a must see for adult drama fans.

Picture and Sound

Excellent options are available on the two disc set including both DTS and Dolby digital 5.1 sound choices. The disc defaults to Dolby 5.1. The film was also digitally remastered for this 10 anniversary release, and looks as clean and sharp as a new film. Both widescreen and fullscreen versions of the film are included on the two disc set.

Extras

Some very entertaining and unusual extras are included in the disc set. Most notably, a new featurette entitled "A.B. C. (Always Be Closing), which interviews real life salespeople, along with cast and crew interviews. Its an unusual and entertaining take on the psychological crossing of real and fictional salesman. A tribute to Jack Lemmon features a ten minute section from a Charlie Rose television interview, and new interviews with the cast are also included. Commentary is provided by director James Foley. Another sweet extra is a 20 minute black and white documentary film which follows the life of a real life salesman, who works hard and has big dreams of success. It's very thought provoking and honest.

Summary

"Glengarry GlenRoss" is a beautiful piece of filmmaking and drama, with a powerful cast and unforgettable performances. Rough language and an honest approach to the subject make this film a must buy for fans of thought provoking, adult drama.

Nosferatu- The Ultimate DVD Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
9 years before Bela Lugosi took on the role of Dracula, German actor Max Schreck portrayed a variation of the iconic monster in the 1922 F.W. Murnau silent film "Nosferatu." While the film is undoubtedly dated in spots, there's no denying how atmospheric and influential "Nosferatu" is.
