Review
This recent comedy features a very talented cast and snappy dialog that will bring a smile to your face. Some of the comedy is outrageous, but not in the Farrelly Brothers style. The cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Gene Hackman, Ray Liotta Jason Lee and Jennifer Love Hewitt. This kind of film is different for some of the cast; Weaver is mostly known for her rough and tough "Alien " roles, Hewitt for her teen romance and horror films, and Liotta for his "Nice Guys" image. However, they do pull it off with very pleasing results.
Weaver and Hewitt play a mother and daughter con artist team, who marry for money and then create a "situation" for a quick divorce settlement. They pull this on Liotta and then head for Florida for one last con, as Hewitt wants to strike out on her own. There they meet Hackman, a coughing, wheezing tobacco king who really supports his product. The con is on but one thing throws a wrench in the works, Hewitt falls for a local bar owner, played by Jason Lee. Weaver must somehow convince her to continue the con with Hackman, so she can be set up for life. Hewitt, known for her giggly attitude and sweet disposition is absolutely convincing as the sexy, foul mouthed siren who lures men to temptation. Weaver has the difficult part of playing a mother who doesn't want her daughter to leave her, feels guilty about her upbringing, but is as sly and cunning as can be. A big scene involves her singing "Back in the USSR" at a Russian nightclub, complete with phony Russian accent. Hackman steals every scene he's in, blowing smoke in Weaver's face, and disposing of a cigarette butt in a lady's drink when he is asked by her to put out his smoke. Liotta plays a New Jersey hood, (not breaking that image) but comically. In one scene, he pulls out a gun and starts shooting the fish on a fishing boat. Also, although appearing tough, his character is really a romantic at heart.
Picture and Sound
Picture-The widescreen picture is in great shape; after all, it is a very new film. It is bright and the picture is very sharp with accurate color rendering and no artifacts. Not a speck of sut is seen. The costume designers had a field day outfitting Weaver and Hewitt, accenting their individual "charms" quite well. Hewitt is especially shown off in this picture in almost every scene, with revealing and sexy outfits. Sound-The 5.1 soundtrack has clean, discreet separation, with full dynamic range. The soundtrack features a variety of well known pop and rock hits, including a song by John Lennon. Dialog is clearly understood through the center channel.
Extras
The disc has a number of extras. Good for you MGM! They include two 20 minute featurettes with cast and crew interviews, behind the scenes footage and outtakes. In one scene, Hewitt falls in a hotel lobby and we learn she actually broke her finger during the fall. There is also two audio commentary tracks; one with director David Mirkin alone, and another with Mirkin, Hewitt and Weaver. 22 deleted scenes are another feature, with or without director commentary which adds additional value to the disc, along with a theatrical trailer.
Summary
I was pleasantly surprised by this sexy comedy by with the talented cast (not known for comedy) and they pull it off well. Technically, the DVD is very good, and MGM is finally coming through with value added extras. For those looking for a funny and fresh comedy, this is a good disc to consider for rent or purchase.

Featured Review
The Peacemaker was the first movie George Clooney made after leaving E.R. to pursue film. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise for most of the film, but, as with a lot of Hollywood movies, lacked a necessary ingredient to really be noteworthy-that of character.
