Review

Kevin Sorbo returns as Hercules in this popular series produced by Sam Raimi (Spiderman 2). Humor is largely evident in this fourth season and due to an injury during shooting, guest stars and supporting cast members were given a bigger chance to shine then in previous seasons.
A huge 9 disc set contains all 22 season episodes and 2 discs of extras. The Anchor Bay sets of Hercules, Xena, and Highlander have become legendary in the own right for the amount of extras included in boxed sets. The episodes deal mostly with humorous plots with guest star Bruce Campbell and sidekick Michael Hurst leading the fun. Just some of the episode titles tells you how fun this season was: "Beanstalks and Bad Eggs", "Men In Pink", "Porkules" and "My Fair Cupcake" to name a few. "Yes Virginia, there is a Hercules" is an interesting romp as well and must be seen to be appreciated. There are also some serious episodes in season four; "Regrets, I've Had a Few" deals with a father who has little time left and Hercules knows it; Armageddon Parts 1, and 2, with a bevy of evil gods, Hercules evil doppelganger, and crossover vehicle for Xena and Gabriel, and Reunions, the season closer, in which Hercules' Earth mother dies and Hercules decides to join his father Zeus on Mt. Olympus. It is a well rounded season but leans more towards humor than others.

Picture and Sound

While the fullscreen picture occasionally gets a bit out of focus in some scenes, production values are much like the other seasons, with clear but not outstanding picture, toned down colors, and good special effects for a television series. Sound is 5.1 Dolby, which adds a lot during the action scenes and the many outdoor sets. Home theater systems will take full benefit from these discs.

Extras

Extras are sprinkled throughout the discs and many episodes contain commentary by series stars Kevin Sorbo, Michael Hurst, and production crews. These are available from the main disc menu on each disc. I have to make mention of the packaging, which is a multifold blister pack. Two discs are placed on one panel of the pack, which may save room but also creates difficulty in getting to the disc you want, as one disc is placed on top of the other. You must remove one disc to get at the one below it and it's a hassle. The 9 disc set includes two discs of extras, one a CD-ROM for PC with the Hercules Chronicles, cast and crew bios, series trivia games and production drawings. The other extra disc contains a special featurette with cast and crew about "Reunions" the series finale of season four, dailies of another episode "Stranger In A Strange World" and a special about the effects group in charge of creating the imaginative monsters in the series.

Summary

Hercules Season Four took some bold steps that strengthened the series with new variety and humor. More than anything, the series manages to poke fun at itself in several episodes and is thoroughly entertaining because of its variety and cast. High quality sound for this action show is a bonus, as are the special features spanning two discs in the set. Fans will want this set as well, which includes some of the best episodes of the series.

Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs-Platinum Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
When Disney announced Snow White as their first "classic" animated feature to hit the DVD format over a year ago, people were pleased but questioned the long time between announcement and release. With this 2 disc set from Disney, you will find the wait has been worth it and also why it took so long for the film to make it onto the DVD format. While Disney was less than enthusiastic about the format to begin with (they were a big advocate of DIVX), they have continuously made great strides in their releases ever since. Criticisms of high prices, commercials at the beginning of each disc, and skimpy extras on their first releases have been quelled with deluxe editions of " A Bug's Life", "Tarzan", "Dinosaur" and "The Emperor's New Groove" with an array of special features, even though their prices remained in the $30.00 street price range. Coming attractions have either been dropped or can at least be skipped at the beginning of discs. Disney has now released this deluxe set (Platinum Edition) at a reasonable price and has included not only the best picture ever achieved for this feature but has gone on to create one of the most creative and thorough editions of any film released in the DVD format. Disney calls it "Immersive". Disney now has embraced the DVD format with great enthusiasm, as the work on this DVD set shows. They designed the set around the DVD format with original and entertaining extras created exclusively for this release. So much information is on these two discs, that a multipage booklet includes a diagram of all the features on both discs.
