Review

This second pairing of Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman is an action and suspense drama, with Judd taking center stage. The appeal of the duo has been compared to other male-female movie couples of the past, including William Powell and Myrna Loy in the Thin Man series and others. They do work well together in this taut drama with a surprise ending that is filled with dramatic flair.
Judd is a high powered attorney that is married to an ex-army officer, who is suddenly arrested for a mass murder of civilians that happened years earlier during a covert operation. Judd then partners up with Freeman, who is an ex-military lawyer with a drinking problem. With his connections and her tenacity, they both start to unravel the mystery behind the massacre. In the process, Judd is attacked for getting to close to the truth and must fight for her own life, as well as for her husband. The acting in the film, directed by Carl Franklin, shows Judd has matured as an actress in her roles, and Freeman is rock solid as always. Judd's husband husband, played by Jim Caviezel is also worthy of attention for his emotional range as the accused husband. Amanda Peet, as Judd's younger sister is a good choice for her role, but Peet has had better roles and is really wasted in this script.

Picture and Sound

Picture-An anamorphic widescreen transfer has excellent color balance and is very sharp and clear. Many of the scenes are night shots and the camera captures them well without graininess. The flashback scenes are also cleverly done by using off colors to emphasize the glimpses into the past. Sound-Dolby 5.1 sound is standard and has good separation of channels for this action film. Surround effects are delegated between the speakers for maximum effect and drama. Highlights include a car chase scene involving the actors in a rollover sequence.

Extras

Full length audio commentary is provided by director Franklin and two unusual featurettes highlight how to beat a lie detector, and the difference between military and civilian law. Other featurettes include a "making of segment" and a special look at the pairing of Judd and Freeman for this second film. A trailer is also included.

Summary

This film features fine performances and a clever plot, along with some good action sequences. The teaming of Judd and Freeman again is a winner and should make this a popular disc for rental and sale. Extras are unusual in scope and well thought out, making this an even better value.
