Review

The Howling was a great success from both critics and fans. Followed by that was The Howling II, which was horrible in all aspects. The fans of the original were disappointed and the critics are severely harsh on it. So the Director of the sequel decided to try and make it up to the fans by making The Howling 3, a satire of the original two. Sadly he was unsuccessful at doing so. Of course he had to call the movie Marsupials, which is probably one of the least scary creatures on the face of the planet.
tells the story of a young marsupial werewolf who arrives in Sydney, gets the lead role in a movie, falls in love with the assistant director, then gets terrorized by the government and some werewolf's. Then the werewolf's join together to stop the scientists. It is a pretty cheesy plotline with even cheesier special effects. Watching it really makes you laugh because you can tell the lack of money which was used to make this. It was supposed to be a satire of the other films but it is still not scary or even funny. I can't recommend this movie to anyone unless you loved the 2nd one. This is a slight improvement but it doesn't come near as respectable as The Howling.

Picture and Sound

The Howling 3 is presented in the original 1.85:1. It is anamorphic and is nearly flawless. The film is about 15 years old so I expected it to look bad but was pleasantly surprised with what I saw. The colors are bright and the black levels are good. My only complaint was some noticeable pixelation. This is a good transfer from Elite Entertainment. A brand-new Dolby Digital 5.1 is given to the DVD. Most of the dialogue comes from the center speakers. The dialogue and music are well separated and the sound effects are used well with all speakers.

Extras

The special features on the disc include a Still Gallery with shots from the movie, behind-the-scenes photos, a theatrical trailer, TV commercial, and a director's commentary by Philippe Mora. The commentary is the most entertaining thing on the disc. You can actually sit through the movie again because Philippe Mora does a good job telling you about the movie and has several insightful things to say. The TV commercial and theatrical trailers are blurry and kind of hard to watch. Elite Entertainment didn't take the time to give them a nice transfer as well.

Summary

There is no reason to buy this DVD. The movie is bad but even so, Elite Entertainment still gave this a good transfer. With sharp Video and nice Sound, it is a shame the movie was such a flop. The commentary is the only good Extra on the disc but for the fans of The Howling or you have just gotten the first two, then you might want to add this one to your collection as well.
