Review
"I Am Legend" is a deeply flawed adaptation of a classic novel.
The story: Robert Neville and his pet dog are the last survivors of a virus that killed everyone in the world (or so Robert thinks) and transformed them into mad, vampire like creatures called Dark Seekers. Aside from gathering supplies and looking for signs of life, Robert spends most of his lonely time trying to find a cure. Will he succeed? Will he find any survivors? As a huge fan of Richard Matheson’s novel, I was quite dissatisfied by this film adaptation as the extensive use of CGI completely took me out of the film. “Omega Man” may be a dated and deeply flawed adaptation, but I found the opening scenes in a REAL deserted Los Angeles to be highly effective and chilling. True, “I Am Legend” does have some real location shooting, but the F/X team covers everything up with their own post-apocalyptic vision. Worst of all, the F/X team makes the movie’s villains (The Dark Seekers) entirely CGI. Not since “Van Helsing” have I been so embarrassed by CGI creations. Just look at the Dark Seeker people with the dogs and try not to laugh. Another issue I had with the script by Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich is that they threw in random bid budget action sequences and some cringe worthy scenes involving Robert talking to Mannequins and acting out “Shrek.” Not only do these scenes not play well on screen, but they are far too long and take up valuable screen time. The only redeeming quality of this adaptation was the acting by Will Smith and the dog. It’s a shame that Will Smith keeps doing these safe Hollywood vehicles as he is wasting his talent. He needs to take meatier roles such as he did in “Ali.”
Picture and Sound
The 2.35:1 widescreen picture quality wasn't quite up to snuff. I couldn't help but wish I was watching the HD DVD or Blu-Ray version instead as it would have made the cityscapes look cleaner and sharper.
The Dolby Surround 5.1 audio track is far better than this movie deserves. The action, the dialogue, the sounds of the city are all crystal clear.
Extras
4 animated comics, DVD-ROM extras, and trailers for "Lost Boys 2," "The Dark Knight," "Speed Racer," "Appleseed Ex Machina," "Justice League: New Frontier," and Blu-Ray and HD-DVD ads.

Featured Review
Those of us who love movies are by nature suspicious of the hype machine, by the outrageous pull quotes festooning newspaper ads, for This Week's Movie Of the Century!!!!, more often than not from blowhard reviewers we've never heard of. And though in my lifetime I've probably spent more time watching television than any other single activity, I'm particularly wary when a series is touted as the greatest work of art in a quarter-century (by the New York Times, no less), when there seems to be some mad competition between critics over who can offer the most lavish praise. And so I came to "The Sopranos" late, for fear that it had been oversold, that it couldn't live up to the hype. I've seen way too many mob movies, and a lot of the more recent ones have just been treading water, picking over the dead carcasses of familiar territory; and it's been a good long while -- dating to when I got my DVD player, probably -- since I got hooked on a television show. But you know what? Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. The pilot episode is a little masterpiece of the form, and the twelve episodes rounding out the season are full of drama, color, texture, of life.
