Ray (Colin Farrell, CASSANDRA’S DREAM) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX) have been sent out of England by their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes, HARRY POTTER) after a botched assassination job. While Ken enjoys the sights of the picturesque medieval town, Ray is increasingly agitated by the lack of anything remotely interesting IN BRUGES. Trouble soon finds the duo, though, when Harry arrives to put Ray and Ken in their proper place.

First time writer/director Martin McDonagh has brought to the screen a darkly comic tale about the humanity present in men capable of wicked things and the twisted sense of honor that keeps even these hired assassins to a strict, if somewhat left of center, moral code. All of the performances are top-notch, but it is Farrell who stands out, imbuing newbie killer Ray with a level of childlike innocence that can keep you from totally hating him for what he’s done and keep giving you the belief that maybe he is someone who has the power to change for the better. Farrell evoked a similar performance in 2007’s Woody Allen snooze-fest CASSANDRA’S DREAM (one of the few highlights of the film along with Ewan McGregor’s performance), and it feels like new but easily traversable territory for the actor.

Picture and Sound

Picture and sound are average, clean and clear enough. The dialogue of the two main characters tends to muddle every now and again, but may be more of a consequence of the actors’ native Irish brogues.

Extras

* Deleted & Extended Scenes. Presented together as a collection.
* Gag Reel. Includes flubs, bust-ups and general goofing off. (6:00)
* When In Bruges. Interviews with the cast and crew about origins of the script, likeability of the characters being at odds with their actions, interpretations of the film’s message and meaning, and thoughts on the film’s optimism and romance. (14:00)
* Strange Bruges. Interviews with the cast and crew about the city as another character in the film and the locations used in shooting. (8:00)
* A Boat Trip Around Bruges. Literally. There is no dialogue in this featurette, just the film’s main theme as a soundtrack while facts about Bruges scroll across the top and bottom of the screen. Almost boring, and not quite entertaining. (6:00)
* F**cking Bruges. A montage of what must be every swear word in the film. Pretty f**king awesome. (1:30)
* Trailers for MISS PETTIGREW LIVES FOR A DAY, PSYCH, HELLBOY II and DOOMSDAY.

Braveheart: Special Collector's Edition

Category: DVD Reviews
"Braveheart" has not stood up well to the test of time, and not because it is a bad film, instead quite the opposite. It is simply because of the crazy little muddle known as Mel Gibson. The film itself is still a rousing, if historically inaccurate tale of William Wallace and his quest to see a Free Scotland. The only problem is that since "Braveheart" airs every weekend on TBS you may not see the point in owning the DVD or even renting it, but to sit back and watch "Braveheart" without commercial interruption is ideal. The Special Collector's Edition is beautiful. The extras are weak, and a whole lotta Gibson.
