Review

Incident at Blood Pass, sometimes called Ambush at Blood Pass, is a very good example of what makes Toshiro Mifune the ultimate samurai when it comes to the golden age of samurai films and beyond. Mifune again plays the Yojimbo character established in the appropriately named, Yojimbo.

The yojimbo with no name has been hired by an unseen master and sent to a a mountain pass to await orders. Luckily, there is a teahouse located at this pass, where a strange array of characters are assembling. The yojimbo has picked up a tagalong on the way, an abused housewife that of course falls for her saviour. The teahouse is run by a silly girl and her grandfather, and a discredited doctor lives out in the barn. The yojimbo leaves the housewife at the teahouse, where she is quickly hired to help out during the upcoming festival. Moving on, the yojimbo realizes that the teahouse may be a good place to wait for his further instructions. Let's just say, all hell breaks out and nothing is what it seems.

Incident at Blood Pass feels a little stagey at time, with characters coming to and going from one location, inside this teahouse. I had a hard time getting into Incident, but I was pleased with the action that finally kicked in. Mifune is at the top of his game in this one, and Katsu Shintaro is equally strong as the discredited doctor that contrasts strongly with one of his seminal role of Zatoichi (See my review for Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo).

Picture and Sound

The picture is restored and for the most part looks really good. However, a dark, exterior scene (a rather important one) is too dark to see either Mifune or Shintaro's faces, which is not cool. But it is what it is. The sound is decent, nothing special, but good enough that is doesn't detract from the film itself.

Extras

Not much in this department, but I suppose it is hard to come up with much else other than character bios and the actors' filmographies from a Japanese film from 1970.

Summary

Incident at Blood Pass starts out a little slowly, but if you stick with it until the end, you will be happy you did. Toshiro Mifune is the Man, followed closely by the diversely talented Katsu Shintaro.
