"Incredible Hulk" fans should no doubt be pleased with the release of seasons 3 and 4 on DVD.

The story of "The Incredible Hulk" is simple. Scientist David Banner is in search of a cure that will step his "hulk outs." Seeing as how his transformations cause a scene wherever they occur, Banner is forced to drift from town to town so that he won't be caught or found out by the police or press.

Let's face it, the strong suit of "The Incredible Hulk" isn't the writing, it's the action. The drawn-out preachy after school special stories about illnesses, children, and crime can be seen on any old TV program. The action, however, is unique for a television show. Seeing the Hulk tossing people and breaking every object known to man never fails to entertain. Of course, the action in the show would never be convincing had it not been for charismatic actor Lou Ferrigno. He truly makes the iconic Marvel comics character his own, which is no doubt why audiences adored the show when it aired. It's also worth noting that Ferrigno actually has a heatfelt speaking role in the season 4 episode "King Of The Beach."

Not to be outdone by Ferrigno is actor Bill Bixby who plays David Banner. Bixby really connects with the audience mainly because he's a person just like you and me. The only difference is he is plagued by having another persona that he can't get rid of. Part of the reason people tuned into the show was to see if Banner would ever be normal again. Audiences wanted Banner to have a normal, non-Hulk life.

My one major complaint, besides the corny stories that lack editing, is that the series did not incorporate more story arcs and characters from the comic series. Rather than making up throwaway, un-original plots like having Hulk at a rock concert or a costume ball, the writers could have delved into many of the comics rich storylines that would have pleased fans and casual fans alike. Also, I really felt the Hulk should have been more powerful than he was on the show, but I'm willing to forgive that as the creative team was working with a limited budget.

As for the episodes, they are predictably hit-and-miss. My personal favorites include "The Most Dangerous Game" like episode "The Snare," the epic "Prometheus 1 and 2," and "My Favorite Magician" which stars Ray Walston and Scatman Crothers.

Picture and Sound

The 1.33: fullscreen picture quality is in better shape than most 80's shows on DVD. Sure there are dirt marks, but Universal has certainly cleaned the episodes up.

The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono track was also surprisingly strong. The roars and destruction made by Hulk certainly put the speakers to work.

Extras

Season 3:
* Remembering The Incredible Hulk: An American Classic- A 17 1/2 minute featurette containing interviews with the cast and crew as they chat about season 3, episodes, ratings, memories abut Bixby, etc.
* "The Incredible Hulk Sneak Peek" (4:00) contains interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the upcoming movie. Can't wait to see it. This extra also appears on the season 4 set.
* The best extra by far is a ticket for "The Incredible Hulk." Season 4 also includes a ticket.
* Trailers for "Wanted," "Doomsday," "The A-Team," "Magnum P.I," "Knight Rider," "House," "Battlestar Galactica," "Crossing Jordan," "Murder She Wrote," "Quantum Leap," "30 Rock," and "Miami Vice." These trailers are on the seaon 4 set too.

Season 4:
* A 2 minute "Prometheus" photo gallery with pop up facts.
* "Creating An Iconic Character: The Hulk"- A fantastic featurette with plenty of neat information about original castings, transformations, and Lou Ferrigno.
* Commentary on "Prometheus 1 and 2" with Kenneth Johnson. He talks about everything from his relationship with Stan Lee to a breakdown of the shoot and shots.

In The Mood For Love

Category: DVD Reviews
Here's a treat exclusively for DVD Corner readers north of the border ; one of last year's most highly acclaimed theatrical releases is coming to DVD in Canada on January 22nd, on this disc from Seville Pictures. (Those of you in the U.S. will have to wait for the Criterion release, on February 26th.) In a recent year-end wrap-up, one of the critics at the New York Times called this the best movie of 2001 ; you won't get much of an argument on that point from me.
