Review

This is a remake of a 1953 science fiction film. It was a pet project of Hooper's,w ho loved the original and always wanted to do a remake, using a good cast and modern special effects. It is a kids film; I remember seeing the original and getting scared, as it centers on a little boy who sees the invaders. The film stars an excellent cast, led by Karen Black, Hunter Carson(her son), Timothy Bottoms, Louise Fletcher, Bud Cort and Larraine Newman. It also has the original boy from the 1953 film in it , Jim Hunt, who plays the local police chief.
Young David wakes up during a thunderstorm and sees a spaceship land just over the hill. When he tells his parents about it, the dad (Bottoms) goes to investigate and comes back a changed man. Soon he is taking friends and his wife (Larraine Newman) over the hill too, much to the terror of young David. With no one else to turn to, he goes to the school nurse, played by Black. He convinces her of the alien's plot to take over everyone's body and soon she is caught up running away with him from the increasing threat from the taken over people in the small town. Black plays her role with much camp but the real show stopper is Louise Fletcher, who plays the evil school teacher. In one memorable scene, David sneaks up behind her to caught her eating a frog. She defiantly swallows the frog in front of him. The part of police chief, played by the original David, has a memorable line as he walks up the hill; he turns to his partner and says, "Gee, I haven't been up here since I was a kid". Another involves Newman trying to calm David down from his "dream" by imitating her own character from the Coneheads. An interesting sidenote for film fans-the house used to shoot the film was also "Mr. Blandings Dream House".

Picture and Sound

Picture-An excellent widescreen transfer is provided by MGM, with barely a flaw. One of the highlights of the film were the special effects, created by John Dykstra and the invader creatures were created by film veteran Stan Winston. The creatures were highly complex mechanical marvels, before CGI came into play in film, and are very imaginative. Sound-A solid soundtrack with Dolby surround is provided and is in full stereo with full dynamic range. Sound effects and dialog are clear and distinct.

Extras

Even though this is a relatively inexpensive disc, MGM did provide some extras, including an original publicity featurette, and a Sci-fi promotional feature. They both contain interviews with cast and crew. An original trailer is also included.

Summary

A great film for kids and adults, this film contains all the good elements including humor, suspense, and marvelous special effects. The cast is excellent and the disc is technically very good. At a fair price, this is a bargain for science fiction film fans.

Total Recall

Arnold Schwarzenegger has proven he is a movie star over the years. He has incredible box office draw and this movie, set in the near future, (2084 A.D.) is a great variation of his common action theme.
