Review

Raymond Burr has done what few actors on television have done; he totally changed his character after a successful stint at CBS as "Perry Mason" to invent the crusty, strong willed Robert Ironside, bound to a wheelchair, in this landmark series. Co-stars included Don Galloway, Barbara Anderson, and Don Mitchell as the team that proves to be a highly charismatic. Burr is the star however and a force to be reckoned with in every episode.
This first season set contains 28 hour episodes and the 1966 pilot television movie which does a great job of establishing all the characters.
The plots to the shows contain late 60s themes; drug use and abuse, hippies and the counter culture movement (even Tiny Tim makes an appearance in the pilot)and the usual cop show themes of murder, theft and cold war politics.
Guest stars included an array of television stars from the era: Kent McCord, Susan St.James, James Farentino, Ed Asner and Pernell Roberts.

Picture and Sound

The quality of the material is remarkable for its age. The pilot looks brand new, with a clear crisp picture and that good color balance. I found the television episodes to be slightly less sharp but still good for their age. Sound is mono but well balanced in a home theater setup.

Extras

Big disappointment-no extras. The 8 disc set comes packaged in a cardboard slip case with four slim clam shell cases containing two discs each.

Summary

This is a must for Raymond Burr fans; the series broke new ground in network television with its rugged themes(for its time), Burr is successful in throwing off the Perry Mason mold, and the costars are talented and blend well with Burr. It is great that this series is finally available for new generations to enjoy.

Wing Commander

When this movie was first released in theatres, I read several reviews that absolutely slammed it. The acting was bad, plot was dumb, and special effects looked like something out of a classic B-movie. Upon watching this movie on DVD, I decided that I will never listen to another reviewer again (just joking). Wing Commander is actually a decent science fiction film. Yes, the acting is bad at times, and the plot is far from creative. But the special effects make up for a lot of that with some truly inspired space battles. I'm sure some of my opinion is based on my low expectations for this film, but I will try to provide an accurate view of this movie's strengths and flaws.
