Review

For the most part, “Jack Brooks- Monster Slayer” fails to impress.

The plot: At a young age Jack Brooks witnessed his family’s murder at the hands of a monster which understandably made Jack an unstable and an angry individual. Now in his 20’s, Jack is living life as a plumber while also attending night school. One night, after repairing a pipe, an ancient monster is unleashed and winds up possessing Jack’s night school teacher. Naturally, all hell breaks loose when the teacher transforms into a hideous monster in front of the students. Can Jack Brooks stop the creature and save the day or is he doomed to see another monster slaughter more people in front of his eyes?

After playing various film festivals, “Jack Brooks- Monster Slayer” had received several rave reviews by horror fans. However, after viewing this horror flick, I have to say I can’t say I understand the acclaim. Aside from a fun performance by horror veteran Robert Englund and an action-packed showdown with the big bad at the college near the end, I was rather bored throughout most of the running time. My main complaint was with the character of Jack Brooks. I just did not find him to be a compelling hero as he was a rather one note character. Actor Trevor Matthews does not have much charisma, and his angry rants about such things as egg rolls were flat out annoying. Ash he is not.

‘Brooks’ does have one redeeming quality and that is without question the various monsters. What makes them so appealing (besides their unique designs) is that they are not computer generated. The monsters are made the old fashioned way with costumes and make-up. I wish more horror filmmakers would do this more often as CGI monsters are RARELY scary.

Picture and Sound

The 1.78:1 widescreen transfer is decent looking for an indie film.

There is a lot going on with the Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. This is a very noisy and lively film and the audio track certainly packs a punch.

Extras

* Anchor Bay trailers including a “Jack Brooks Monster Slayer” trailer.
* On set and conceptual art galleries.
* 6 storyboard comparisons to final product.
* 5 deleted scenes.
* “Creating The Music” is a 13 minute featurette on the score by Ryan Shore.
* 3 minutes of footage from the “World Premiere: Stiges, Spain” and the Q&A session.
* “Creating The Monsters”- A 15 minute featurette on the creature and special makeup effects.
* A fun 50 minute “Behind The Scenes” featurette that includes set footage, interviews, insight into the shoot, etc.
* Commentary by Jon Knautz, Ryan Shore, Patrick White and Trevor Matthews. The gang crack jokes, talk about casting, the props, etc. Not a great track, but it’s worth listening to if you are a fan of the movie.

Cashback

Category: DVD Reviews
"Cashback" was originally a 2005 Oscar-nominated short. Surreal, dreamy, and often quite funny, it was a great looking piece of cinema art by English writer/director Sean Ellis, who later expanded it to this feature-length film. He includes most of the original short into this film, and also manages to effectively maintain the same look and tone while incorporating it into a more conventional story. It's still a great piece of work, and one of the most charming romantic comedies I've seen in a long, long time.
