Joseph is brought to you by the same team that produced Prince Of Egypt, last year's remarkable animated biblical story. The producers of Prince started the Joseph project before the completion of Prince and therefore, the looks of these two features is similar, with the same high quality standards.
Joseph is the pampered son born late in his parents life, so his treated different than his half brothers. At an early age, he discovers that he has the ability to dream and interpret their meanings, adding more resentment to his half brother's attitudes towards him. When he tells of a dream in which he is raised above his brothers, his father interprets this as a sign from God that he is the chosen one to lead the family, instead of his older brother. Joseph doesn't particularly want this responsibility as he is a dreamer, while his brothers all toil working the land. His brothers finally have enough and have Joseph sold into slavery, which leads Joseph to a new life in Egypt. As a house slave, Joseph's talents are discovered by his master, his wife, and one of his daughters. When Joseph rejects his master's wife one night, she lies and tells that he attacked her. He is swiftly thrown into prison, where his faith is first lost and then found again. Eventually, he is released and led to the Pharoah, to interpret his dreams. Joseph's reaches the pinnacle of power when the Pharaoh appoints him second only to him in power. The vocalizations were done by Hollywood hunk Ben Affleck, as Joseph, and the supporting cast includes Mark Hamill, Jodi Benson, Judith Light, Maureen McGovern and David Campbell, among others. This is also a musical, with new songs written by composer Stephen Schwartz. While the songs are not as strong as Prince, they are all well produced and arranged beautifully.
Picture and Sound
Picture-This made for video DVD has a flawless picture, that never was ever on film, but was digitally transferred on the completion of work. As such, the animation is breathtaking at times. Joseph's early dreams take on a look of Van Gogh with moving, swirling colors and bright, simple images. The animation shows great dimension in some scenes, such as when Joseph is working on a mural of his family. Sound-The Dolby 5.1 soundtrack covers all five channel plus speakers with a good mix, although I thought it was a bit heavy in the lower frequencies. While this is usually not a problem, I found it a bit overwhelming during some of the musical numbers. Separation was clean and clear through the channels, with numerous effects traveling from front to rear channels for some great spatial effects.
Extras
Dreamworks has packed this disc with extras, many of them for PC DVD-ROM activities (sorry Mac fans-when will they learn!). The DVD-ROM features include downloadable Coloring sheets and activity sheets, and a memory game. The disc also includes a storyboard presentation and director's commentary, sing-a-long songs, a read-a long, an interactive trivia game, a trailer, production notes, and cast and crew bios.
Summary
Joseph is a treat for eyes and tells a wonderful story of faith renewed and reborn. It is a great kid movie, with appealing animation and will be enjoyed by all family members, as it deals with some adult themes, to keep older members tuned in. Technically flawless, the DVD is reasonably priced and contains many extras, mostly for the children. Dreamworksproduces another modern retelling of an ancient story with excellent results.
