Review

Peter and Bobby Farrelly scored big with this 1996 hit comedy starring Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid. The story centers on a prominent up and coming young bowler( Harrelson) , who is state bowling champion back in the late seventies and goes to the big city to seek his fortune. Unfortunately he meets up with a low-life bowler played with charm by Bill Murray, who cons Harrelson big time and leaves him minus his bowling hand.
Years later, Harrelson meets a naive Amish bowler played by Quaid and Harrelson convinces him to be coached and then go to the big tournament in Las Vegas, where Harrelson can finally get even with his old nemesis, Murray. Along the way, they hustle a rich bowler and meet Venessa Angel, who is gorgeous but is also very streetwise, especially to Harrelson. Together, they plot and hustle their way into Las Vegas and the big showdown match with Murray. Of course the humor is crude, and the frightening picture of Harrelson"s landlady is enough to make Harrelson puke up his guts after

Picture and Sound

Picture-The picture is acceptable, with a few artifacts being present in most scenes along the characters outlines. It is a newer movie(1996) and with a little effort, MGM could have done a much better job on the picture. The colors are realistic and even, as would be expected from a newer film like this. The director"s capture the atmosphere of the typical bowling alley very well, and obviously , like most Farrelly pictures, it must have been fun making this film. Sound-Once again, as in Something About Mary , the Dolby Digital 5. 1 Surround soundtrack was not really used effectively. There are a few surrounds in the rear speakers, such as cars zooming by but most of the soundtrack is in center and front speakers only, which is unfortunate. The Farrelly"s really need to find a good sound mixer for their home video releases so the soundtrack can enhance the comedic scenes in the film.

Extras

There is additional footage not seen in the theatrical release, feature length commentary by the Farrelly brothers, the original trailer, and an eight page booklet enclosed with the keep case. Not bad for extras at the $24.95 MSRP price; I really like their commentaries, which brings more humor into the film.

Summary

The Farrelly brothers just keep cranking out the hits-Dumb and Dumber, There's Something about Mary and Kingpin, which a good representation of their work and humor. While often crude, these guys know how to make you laugh and Kingpin does just that. The picture, sound and extras could have been better but considering the price this is a good disc for the price. Woody Harrelson and Randy Quaid turn in fine performances and Vanessa Angel shows she is talented in a lot of ways. A good rent and if you are a fan of Farrelly comedy, a good disc to own.

Renaissance

Category: DVD Reviews
Like the mega-flop, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within," this animated French sci-fi film is a wonder to look at. That alone probably makes "Renaissance" worth checking out at least once. But once the novelty of a movie's unique look wears off, in the end, you still need compelling characters and a story that warrants being a full length feature film. Unlike the horrid "Final Fantasy," which was more of a product than a movie, "Renaissance" does have a decent story, but one which would have been better served up as a short subject, especially since there aren't any characters we really care about.
