Review

The original 1988 film, "The Land Before Time" was a surprisingly charming little adventure, and at the time, showed that another studio besides Disney was capable of decent animated fare. Universal has been cranking out direct-to-video sequels ever since, some better than others, but all inferior to the original. "The Wisdom of Friends" is no exception. The THIRTEENTH film in the franchise, it's totally bland and unremarkable, little more than something to plop your toddlers in front of while you do other things.
The plot has Littlefoot and his friends coming to the aid of a couple of dim-witted dinosaurs (voiced by Cuba Gooding Jr & Sandra Oh) who get lost on the way to Berry Valley. The usual series of adventures and narrow escapes ensure, along with a few heavy-handed lessons and unmemorable musical numbers (funny...I don't remember the original movie needing any songs). The animation itself is on par with the average TV cartoon show, much like most of the previous entries. My three-year-old enjoyed it, and I suppose that's important. On the other hand, she enjoyed some of the others, too, but seldom ever wanted to watch them again more than a couple of times.

Picture and Sound

The picture is presented in 1.33:1 fullscreen, which kinda sucks when you realize even most direct-to-video movies made these days are now in widescreen. The sound is pretty good though, rendered in 5.1 Dolby Digital.

Extras

Fittingly, the bonus features will be of appeal to the kids who love the movie. There's an episode from the TV series, a few interactive games and a sing-along feature.

Summary

If your kids like the others, there's no reason they won't enjoy this one. "The Wisdom of Friends" is a passable kiddie product, but nothing more. There's none of the creativity and imagination of the original film here.

Even in this age of CGI technology, the visuals in this classic have rarely been equaled. Special effects aside, it's a damn entertaining movie, and manages to seamlessly combine the dark sensibilities of 40's film noir with the loony spirit of classic Warner Brothers cartoons. The film is finally given a proper DVD treatment with this release.
