Review

This sandal epic is unusual and original. Set in Rome near the end of the Empire. It stars Colin Firth as a Roman commander, Ben Kingsley as a sorcerer-teacher, and Aishwarya Rai as a Turkish fighter. Thomas Sangster also stars as a young Caesar. Viewing this film was a very pleasant surprise.
The Roman Empire is being invaded by barbarians, and a young Caesar has just been crowned. When an attempt is made on his life, the Roman general (Colin Firth) appointed to guard him flees the city with the young man in tow. The Turkish ambassador also appoints his personal guard to accompany the pair as they make their way to Constantinople and promised sanctuary. They are also accompanied by the young Caesar's teacher (Ben Kingsley) and the general's small band of dedicated troops. Along their journey, they are betrayed by a Roman senator and the Turkish ambassador and must abandon their planned destination and go to Britannia and the Last Roman Legion still stationed there. Picture and Sound

A beautiful widescreen presentation helps this modern epic present the correct mode of the film, as there are many fight sequences and battles. The screen is busy a lot of time. Effects are also well done. The sets creating the ancient Roman statues are first rate. In one scene, Firth camps under a statue's hand and Sangster is first seen climbing a gigantic statue to watch the troops. Sound is 5.1 Dolby and is perfect for this kind of film. Sword battles and shields crashing are captured in the soundtrack for added realism of the scenes.

Extras

The disc has a healthy dose of extras, including a "making of" 20 minute feature with cast and crew interviews, a storyboard to film comparison, commentary from director Doug Lefler, deleted scenes with commentary, and a special feature on choreography for the film. It's a good value for a single disc.

Summary

This is a surprisingly good film and highly recommended. After the big epics of Alexander and Troy, this was a real breathe of fresh air. Great action, not too much heady dialog, a good cast and intelligent script make this a sleeper hit. Enjoy it. BTW-If you've read this review and would like a copy of this dvd, write to me.
