Review
In 926 A.D., the capital of Balhae fell to the power of the Georan, thanks to the merciless power of the Killer-Blade Army. Any surviving members of the royal family are eliminated, sending the kingdom into hopelessness and chaos. A year later, Soha (Yoon Soy), a lovely female warrior with a deathly sword, is on a quest to bring peace and order back. She is journeying to find Prince Jung-Hyun (Lee Seo Jin), the only remaining member of the royal family, and convince him to take his place as ruler of Balhae.
Without much trouble, Soha discovers the Prince, who has been missing for fourteen years, living as a buyer and seller of artifacts, under the alias Sosam. Though reluctant at first, once he is faced with the dangerous Killer-Blade Army, he sides with Soha and begins the journey back with her. The plot is fairly simple, as it revolves around Soha and Prince Jung-Hyun's journey back to Balhae and the fights along the way. These two are tailed everywhere they go, but with the Shadowless Sword of Soha to protect him, the Prince is definitely in good hands. The battles are numerous, and they are wonderful to witness. Had this film arrived on the market sooner, it could have taken Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's place as the most memorable sword-swinging, rooftop-running action flick in recent years. The fights are never boring, and are skillfully shot and executed. Aside from the action, the two main characters are portrayed well, with Yoon Soy's role as Soha particularly impressive. They are, it must also be said, two of the only characters in the film that do not sink into the realm of camp. Every other character seems to be an extra lifted straight out of a Pirates movie- dreads, eyeliner, Keith Richards' mannerisms and all. However, having seen only a handful of other Asian action flicks, I find these bit characters enjoyable, as they definitely ensure things won't be boring. Part of the reason I did like this film is because I am unfamiliar with movies of this genre. I'm sure the simple plot may be a bit dull for more devoted fans of the genre, and it would have been nice to have a bit more inner turmoil or plot twists, but it plays out nicely. The action is superb, and while the humor may be a bit much for some, I found The Legend of the Shadowless Sword to be a decent tale about a lost prince's journey to his rightful throne.
Picture and Sound
The picture could have been a bit better, but it was pretty decent. No problems with sound.
