Review

First, this is not another rehash of the old television series. Those discs have been covered by us already. Through the success of the series, Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels starred in two big budget motion pictures distributed by Warner Brothers in the late fifties. This DVD is the first feature film.
The Ranger and his faithful Indian companion Tonto are hired by the governor to find out who is invading Indian territory and stealing cattle from the ranchers. A range war is brewing and it's up to the Ranger to stop it. Clayton Moore gets to wear disguises, posing as an old prospector to get information. The ranchers are led by Reece Kilgore (Lyle Bettger), who secretly is planning to exploit the Indian land for his own purposes. The Ranger must deal with both sides; traveling to the Indian village to calm down hothead Michael Ansara and appease the chief, while spying on the evil rancher. There's a lot of action in this film, with Silverheels and Moore both having terrific fight scenes. The two sidekicks are comfortable in their roles by now, and show up the bad guys at every turn.

Picture and Sound

Picture-A gorgeous, pristine Warner Color print is the highlight of this DVD, offered in both widescreen and fullscreen versions. Colors are accurate and there are very few color shifts or dust spots. It was a real treat to watch and VCI should be commended for the fine mastering done on this DVD. Sound-The Dolby digital mono soundtrack comes through without hiss or noise. While dynamic range is limited because of its age, the original soundtrack never sounded better.

Extras

This DVD set includes an extra disc which contains a lengthy interview with Michael Ansara, who plays a warlike Indian in the feature. Unfortunately, Ansara remembers little about the film itself, except for the location and fight scene he has with Moore. However, he does remember Moore affectionately as a person, and talks at great length about his own career in Hollywood, including his television series Broken Arrow. Another long interview highlights the second disc as Leonard Maltin interviews Dawn Moore, daughter of Clayton. She recalls growing up with the Lone Ranger as her dad, and also shows Leonard a number of original items from the series, including silver bullets and one of his original masks. The fascinating thing about Moore was the fact that he really was the persona of the Lone Ranger in real life. What you saw on the screen was the real deal; he took seriously his role of hero, especially his influence on children. A collection of still photographs, the Lone Ranger Creed, and original movie trailers from both Lone Ranger films, along with extensive biographies of the key actors in the film make up the rest of the extras disc. One interesting fact is that a costar of the film is Bonita Granville, whose husband was Jack Wrather. They co-produced the Lone Ranger television series and went on to produce television's beloved Lassie series.

Summary

Fans looking for new and high quality Lone Ranger material have hit the jackpot with this DVD. The color print is excellent, and the larger budget for the film shows up in the acting, the stuntwork, and writing of the script. The DVD set, with two full versions of the film and an additional DVD with extras are a real tribute to the character and to Clayton Moore. Lone Ranger fans will want to pick this one up as it's the best I've seen on DVD so far.

Arctic Tale (HD-DVD)

Category: DVD Reviews
When I saw the cover of the "Arctic Tale" HD-DVD, I was expecting a kiddy documentary whose sole purpose was to capitalize on "March Of The Penguin's" success. While the film has a few cutesy moments, the footage on screen is every bit as moving and captivating as any documentary you will see.
