Review

When the pilot episode of "Lost" premiered in 2004, my spider sense told me the show was going to be something special. The show struck me as having the potential to become a cult hit like "The X-Files" or "Twin Peaks." Cut to 2007 where the series has become a larger than life cult phenomenon. Of course, it hasn't been entirely smooth sailing for "Lost". The third season stirred quite a debate among fans with a string of less than stellar episodes that wound up decreasing viewership. Thankfully, however, the show managed to bounce back from its mistakes.
For the uninitiated, "Lost" revolves around the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 who crash land on an island that contains a smoke monster, polar bears, hatches, and the island's inhabitants dubbed "The Others." "Lost" is a serialized show in which each episode contains flashbacks from one character. After two riveting seasons, I was sad to find "Lost" somewhat stumbles in season three. It doesn't help that the first 7 episodes nearly killed the show. Not only does a beloved character unnecessarily bite the dust, but the show doesn't bother to show us the characters we care about. Instead we get to watch dull scenes of Jack in a cell, Kate and Sawyer in cages, and learn more about "The Others" who were decidedly more intriguing when we knew very little about them in seasons 1 and 2. On top of that, viewers get throwaway episodes like Jack's tattoo adventure ("Stranger In A Strange Land") and more repetitive and pointless flashbacks involving Kate. Thankfully, the season picks up steam in episode 8, with a Desmond centric episode explaining what happened to him after the hatch implosion. After that, there's the cleverly written episode "Expose" which features newbies Nikki and Paulo, the Benry episode "The Man Behind The Curtain" that gives us our first look at Jacob, and let us not forget the jam packed 2 part finale "Through The Looking Glass." I have to say the finale was infinitely more satisfying than virtually every film I saw this year. Without giving away too much, I will say the episode features a shocking death, intense action, twists, turns, a past character, and so much more. Why can't every episode be like this?

Picture and Sound

The 1.78:1 widescreen picture quality is even better than the original broadcasts. I really have no complaints here. The English Dolby Digital 5.1 track is extremely layered for a TV show. The score, the dialogue, the sound f/x (whispers, explosions, jungle noises, etc.) all sound crystal clear.

Extras

Disc 1: * ABC TV on DVD preview * "A Tale Of Two Cities" commentary by Damon Lindelof and Elizabeth Mitchell. Disc 2: * "I Do" commentary by Carlton Cuse, Evangeline Lilly, and Josh Holloway. Josh (who plays Sawyer) livens up the track as he cracks several good jokes. Disc 4: * "Exposure" commentary by writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Disc 5: * "The Man Behind The Curtain" commentary by Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, and Michael Emerson. Disc 7: * 9 deleted scenes. The only one worth mentioning involves a discussion between Locke and Hurley about superhero powers. * The Orchid Instructional Film * "Lost Book Club" is a featurette on the literary material that appears in various episodes. 8 minutes. * Blooper reel (6 1/2 mins.) * 3 useless "Lost Flashbacks." * Disney trailers. * "Cast In Clay: Creating The Toys Of Todd Mcfarlane" (5 mins.) takes a look at how they created the nifty action figures. I own the hatch playset myself. * "The Next Level: Inside The Video Game"- The creators and game developer (Ubisoft) team up to create a promising video game. * A self-explanatory featurette titled "The World Of The Others" (14 mins.) * "Terry O'Quinn: Throwing From The Handle" is a 1 1/2 minute look at Terry's knife throwing abilities. * 10 Lost: On Location" segments that features set footage and cast/crew interviews. * "Lost In A Day" is a 25 1/2 minute inside look at the production and post-production work in a 14 hour period. * "Crew Tribute With Evangeline Lilly" is a tribute to the sound, camera, and other crew members.

Summary

The third season of "Lost" has its up and downs, but it's unquestionably one of the best (and most addicting) shows on television. If the finale is any indication, viewers should be in for one hell of a ride when season four airs.

A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila: The Complete Uncensored First Season

Category: DVD Reviews

I saw a promo for that irritating Comedy Central show, The Root of All Evil, one night after watching South Park. Lewis Black said something about Tila Tequila being the root of all evil, and I respectfully disagree with Mr. Black. Tila Tequila is a symbol for everything wrong with my generation, but she is not the root of all evil. She is merely a tool of that evil.
