Review
Denzel Washington continues his strong performances as an ex-CIA operative who is searching for an answer. He gets that answer from a young girl, played by Dakota Fanning, in another fine performance. How this kid can act! She is truly remarkable to watch. Other in the cast include Christopher Walken as his ex-CIA buddy in Mexico, and a sexy Radha Mitchell as Fanning's mom. Mickey Rourke as a crooked lawyer has a small but significant role and Marc Anthony round out the excellent cast.
Being ex-CIA, Washington is haunted by his past; the killing and torture that was a normal part of his job. Now searching for answers, he goes to Mexico City where his ex-CIA friend (Walken) has set up what looks like an easy job for him, being a body guard for a young girl, whose family is rich and powerful, and a target for kidnappers. During his watch, Washington finally finds some peace for himself as his relationship grows with the girl. When she is kidnapped, Washington's pent up rage from years past is unleashed as he goes after the kidnappers one by one. A remarkable story with many layers, this action thriller is much more than brainless violence. Characterizations of the main cast members is complex and multilayered, with many memorable scenes between cast members. The dialog is rich and well written. Scenes between Washington and Fanning are subtle but remarkably realistic and Mitchell adds an additional layer of hidden desire in her dealings with Washington. Scenes depicting Washington's rage are also well orchestrated and emphasize Washington's desire for revenge and results. He definitely sending a strong message to the kidnappers, with brutal and cold killings.
Picture and Sound
Excellent widescreen transfer (2.40:1) has clear and sharp detail. Colors reflect the beauty and age of Mexico City. Sound is remarkably clear, with a DTS soundtrack and Dolby 5.1 as choices. Both soundtracks are excellent opportunities to show off a home theater setup.
Extras
Commentary is provided by director Tony Scott, and a separate track includes producer Lucas Foster, screenwriter Brian Helgeland, and actress Dakota Fanning. No commentary from Washington (bummer);hey, the man is busy! The disc is sparse on other extras however.
Summary
An excellent Washington action adventure, with sophisticated and complex characterizations and strong, powerful performances. Holds up well to repeated viewings, this is a great disc and highly recommended for action fans.

Featured Review
Comic book movies of the past have had mixed results-Batman was quite a box office smash the first couple of times, Superman the same, but some efforts, like The Phantom , The Shadow, etc. have been less than sterling in their final form. X-Men has a couple of good things going for it from the start; Patrick Stewart, who picks his material carefully, and also Ian MacKellan, who has earned praise from the acting community for years. Add to this a new director (Bryan Singer), a cast of new and unknown actors of "we try harder" actors including Anna Paquin, Hugh Jackman, James Marsden, , babes Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, and Rebecca Romlin Stamos and you get an entertaining picture.
