Review

This is one of the new discs from the second James Bond set released recently by MGM Home Video. It features Roger Moore as 007, a part played with tongue in cheek humor. Featured as villains are Christopher Lee, and the menacing Herve Villechaize( The Plane! The Plane!) The babes were portrayed by Maude Adams and Britt Ekland. It also is the second appearance of Clifton James as Sheriff JW Pepper, as red-neck southerner who was introduced in Live and Let Die. I can't really say I like this character very much-I thought he was a bigot and crude. Real laughable, huh!
The movie doesn't start out with the usual world crisis caused by the villain scenario-instead we learn that Christopher Lee has three nipples, a gorgeous girl (Maude Adams) who can't stand him, and a midget butler. This is serious stuff here folks! Mr. Lee grew up in the circus and so he has a mirror maze set in his house, complete with life sized targets of James Bond. For some reason, he wants to kill Bond. Gosh-what an idea! Wasn't that done in "From Russia With Love"? Sorry. Mr. Lee also has this great lighter-combo fountain pen that turns into a golden pistol-just the thing for the nasty business disagreements. He uses it on more than one occasion but when he gets Bond in his sights, he misses and kills a poor schnook coming out of a bar. Maude Adams wants Mr. Lee dead so she makes love to Bond, while Ekland is in the closet and the next time we see her, she is at the kick boxing matches, stone cold but eyes wide open and sitting up straight. I won't go on.

Picture and Sound

Picture- The picture presented in widescreen is in fairly good shape but not exceptional. A few dusty spots are visible during the opening scenes and the colors are a bit muted, starting to fade with time. The scenery is gorgeous as always in Bond flicks, and the chases unbelievable. The car jumping over the broken bridge, flipping 360 degrees and landing is a good one. Artifacts are minimal and focus is sharp. Sound-The Dolby soundtrack is 2.0 and OK . No distortion on the soundtrack, and loud enough for the chases and gunfire, although 2.0 sound is disappointing on a Bond film. I like to here that Bond theme loud during the fights.

Extras

As with all these Bond reissues, there are lots of extras included. Among them are great animated menus, a 35 minute featurette called "Inside The Making of The Man With The Golden Gun", a 29 minute featurette on Double O stuntmen-a long overdue tribute to these films, audio commentary from director Guy Hamilton, cast and crew bios, 2 theatrical trailers, 3 radio spots, 2 TV spots, and a gallery of stills. A good amount of extras for the film-but a hefty price tag too.

Summary

I never really cared that much for the Roger Moore version of 007-I still think Sean Connery is the only one that can play him correctly, although Pierce Brosnan has come close. I found this film laughable and the character of JW Pepper repulsive. Add to that a midget assassin and Mr. Lee's extra nipple and this one is a real joke. Only for the Bond faithful.

Diary Of A Mad Black Woman

Category: DVD Reviews
"Diary of a Mad Black Woman" is one of the most annoying, badly-paced & schizophrenic movies I've ever seen. It's sad, really, because somewhere in this 116 minute endurance test is a really good movie waiting to get out. Maybe the original play on which it's based is better, but not only is it staggering the film was a box office hit, I'm amazed anyone would greenlight something like this to begin with. It's a film that you watch in dumbstruck awe at the utter banality of the stupid & insulting attempts at broad humor, lament over some admittedly interesting characters who drown in a script that often betrays them, and grow irritated at the ever-shifting tone.
