Evil corporation + John Grisham + "The Insider"= Michael Clayton
The story: Down on his luck attorney/fixer Michael Clayton is called into clean up a colossal mess involving a friend/litigator named Arthur who could blow the whistle on the corporation (U/North) he works for. What is U/North covering up? How far will U/North go to silence Arthur? Will Michael's life be threatened as well? What will Michael do? "Michael Clayton" had the potential to be an intense legal drama that could easily rank alongside any of John Grisham's legal thrillers. Unfortunately, writer Tony Gilroy tarnishes the script with a weak story structure that reveals virtually every important scene in the opening, which leaves little room for surprise. As a result, we are subjected to a slow moving and predictable story about yet another evil corporation (how many are there?) Luckily for the viewers, the acting manages to salvage an otherwise mediocre film. George Clooney continues to show his range as a nervous man who has lost everything in life. Watching him in "Michael Clayton," it's hard to believe that this is the same actor who played a slapsticky character in the hilarious "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" The real standout, however, is Tom Wilkinson as the smart yet ranting madman. Even though his role is limited, he owns every scene he is in.

Picture and Sound

The widescreen picture quality was one of the weakest I have seen from a high-profile DVD release. There was an unusual amount of grain to be seen here. Hopefully, the hi-def releases won't look this mediocre. The Dolby Surround 5.1 track was very flat. Aside from a few instances, there is very little life to this track.

Extras

* Trailers for "The Brave One," "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford," "State Of Play," "10,000 B.C.," "Funny Games," and "Get Smart." * 3 additional scenes with optional commentary by Tony and John Gilroy. * A sleep inducing commentary track by Tony and John Gilroy. They just rattle off facts about shooting and editing. It would have been nice to have Clooney or producer Steven Soderbergh join them on this track.

Summary

"Michael Clayton" is a well acted legal drama, but it's wholly undeserving of its critical acclaim. You're honestly better off reading or watching a John Grisham story or a classic legal tale like "The Verdict."
