Review

To fans of this series, this third season is considered the best, although it comes in short in the number of episodes of a usual "season". Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd play the humorous, sometimes romantic detective couple which erupts into pure passion this season along with other highlights. Willis finally won an emmy for this season's performance as David Addison, which helped launch his film career.
What makes this season so enjoyable is the great variety of episodes which keeps the series lively and energenic. The cast even makes a couple long used themes, "Taming Of The Shrew" and "It's A Wonderful Life" into highly entertaining vehicles with this cast. One of my favorites was "Yours, Very Deadly" that includes a hilarious scene of Maddie and David waiting at the Post Office for a suspect to pick up his mail. Rona Barrett hams it up in "The Straight Poop", playing herself in a flashback, highlight episode and Allyce Beasley gets the spotlight in her own, ghostly episode. Mark Harmon comes on for three episodes near the end of the season to stir the romantic pot to a boil between Maddie and David as ex-flame and handsome astronaut Sam.

Picture and Sound

The fullscreen mid-80's color picture is in great shape with very few visible flaws. Colors are rich and the images are sharp in almost all scenes. Dolby digital helps out with the admired, contemporary soundtrack.

Extras

The extras are far fewer then on the Season One and Two disc set with sparse commentary from Shepherd and Willis on some episodes, and "look back" at the season with cast principles, including Curtis Armstrong, who joined the cast in this season as Bert Viola. I found this set of extras to be the weakest part of the dvd set. Packaging is similar to Season One and Two; a metallic silver cardboard cover with clamshell, plastic "pages", which turn like a book, holding the four DVDs. I like the cover concept but the shiny metallic cover attracts fingerprints easily. I also found an error on disc three of the set, with menu items for two episodes missing.

Summary

Fans who campaigned to get this series on DVD will rejoice at this season's set, even if there are only 15 episodes. Emmy award winning performance by Willis, great writing and variety, romantic entanglements , and , oh, yes, an occasional mystery too. Great fun!
