Review

In the midst of a life-altering heartbreak, Elizabeth (Norah Jones, in her feature film debut) meets café owner Jeremy (Jude Law, CLOSER).  They connect over stories of loss and love and the café’s blueberry pie that remains untouched at the end of every night.  Without explanation, Elizabeth disappears, leaving Jeremy behind as she journeys across the country in search of something that might soothe the ache in her heart.



Along the way, she meets Arnie (David Strathairn, GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK) and Sue Lynne (Rachel Weisz, THE CONSTANT GARDENER), an estranged husband and wife torn apart by deceit and thrown back together by tragedy.  Then Elizabeth meets Leslie (Natalie Portman, CLOSER), a card player who first gambles away Elizabeth’s money, and then her time and trust.  Eventually, her journey leads her back to Jeremy.  And she discovers that the balm to her heartache was within her grasp the entire time.

Although Elizabeth is the one whose journey we follow, it is the characters she meets along the way who tell the most compelling stories.  Likewise, it is the actors that Norah Jones shares the screen with who take control of our attention and give the most riveting performances.  Jones gets lost in the whirlwind of talent that surrounds her at every step.

Every shot in MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS is a visually stunning postcard, but it is the supporting cast who shoulder the weight of the film.  Director Wong Kar Wai (2046, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE) takes a confident step in his first feature length English language film, but makes a miscalculation in his choice for the lead.

 SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING THE DVD CASE:  The image borrowed from Amazon shows Jude Law with the ladies on the cover, but the DVD that this reviewer received does not feature Mr. Law.  What's up with that?
