Review

This lovingly rendered impressionistic film is finally brought to DVD.
The majority of American films produced in our modern age practically beg to be heard, jumping and nipping at our ankles like an excitable dog. It makes those moments when you come across a quiet, calm film, like Old Joy, that much more striking to your senses. You start to pay closer attention to the colors on the screen, the imagery that the director is methodically weaving together, and it makes those moments of plot and action that much richer and weighty. The story of Old Joy is easy to sum up

Picture and Sound

Peter Sillen's simple and beautiful cinematography looks positively transcendent on this disc, even in those long scenes when the camera is simply pointed at buildings and landscapes as the characters move through the story.

Extras

Feature-length audio commentary from Reichardt, Sillen, and filmmaker Michael Almereyda; theatrical trailer; a slide show of production stills.

Summary

One of the best movies to come out of the independent film movement in quite some time. An absolute must-see.

Devil's Den

Category: DVD Reviews
Essentially a low-rent rip-off of "From Dusk 'till Dawn," "Devil's Den" isn't as lurid and raunchy as the box blurb suggests, and contains nothing (technically or plotwise) that hasn't been done better in other films. But despite an opening twenty minutes that'll have seasoned horror fans rolling their eyes as they reach for the off button on the remote, it actually gets better as it goes along. Not a lot better, but enough to make this low-budget horror comedy worth checking out once if you keep your expectations low (which, of course, horror fans are used to doing).

Movie Quotes

Well, I've wrestled with reality for thirty-
five years, Doctor, and I’m happy to state I
finally won out over it.
