Review

Interested in another film similar to The Sixth Sense. I am, considering the fact that that is one of my favorite movies ever, plus lately, Hollywood hasn't seemed to been able to release a movie that actually scares audiences today. Fairly new director Alejandro Amenabar wrote and directed this clever story set in the 1940's right after the ending of World War II. But is this movie worthy of being listed as one of the scariest movies to come out in the past couple of years?
The Others has a fairly simple plot. Nicole Kidman plays a mother of two children who have a rare disease. Xeroderma Pigmentosum is a real disease, which causes severe burns to the person who has it if they go into daylight, or bright light. Of course, something begins to happen in the house they stay in, in the middle of nowhere no less. The setting, which is always dark, sets the mood of the film from beginning to end. Are they alone? Do ghosts walk around in their home? The answer isn't included until the ending, which in my opinion is rather shocking. I will admit, I am a sucker for thrillers. If a film has good word of mouth, or the critic's reviews are good and they say it could actually scare you, I'm there in a heartbeat. I came into The Others hoping to be scared, and for the most part I was. It actually made me jump a few times. I really enjoyed the movie and have watched it several times since getting it. Though not as good as some recent films (The Sixth Sense), which had a similar plot, it still worked well with what it had. The cast is small, and setting is set in the middle of nowhere so the tension builds up as the film goes. The Others is a well-made film presented like the classic horror tales of the past. I highly recommend it.

Picture and Sound

Video: The movie is very dark, due to the fact that the kids aren't allowed in the sunlight or any other heavy light so the DVD must do a good job, which for the most part it does. The only major problems are there are a few, is the edge enhancement. While seen, it can be distracting at times but nothing too bad is apparent. Some minor noise also appears throughout the film, again not too distracting. Overall, for a film this dark, the disc isn't all that bad. Sound: The Others includes a nice Dolby Digital 5.1 track is a plus to the disc. Alejandro Amenabar also put it upon himself to do the score for the film as well. The film is very quite, but when the time is right, the speakers get used well with loud noises to make you jump and the dialogue comes across clear and crisp. No complaints on this track.

Extras

After watching disc two of the 2-disc "Dimension Collector's Series", I have to wonder why the second disc is needed. The first thing on the disc is "A Look Inside The Others", which runs for 22 minutes and talks about how great the film was to make, and how wonderful the cast and crew was. Yet it does contain some useful information on the score, the backdrop of the story, and the directors past work so it is not all fluff. "An Intimate Look at Alejandro Amenbar" is an 8-minute featurette, which does and gives no information about him, but rather just shows behind the scenes information and how he was able to create The Others. Not the best thing I have seen before, but a nice piece to include. The last big thing on the disc is a 9-minute feature on the disease known as Xeroderma Pigmentosum, which is the condition the kids in the film have. It shows a family dealing with it, as well some facts about the disease like there are less than 100 families in the US, which have someone with this condition. It is an interesting look at how a real family deals with this problem. A theatrical trailer for The Others as well as trailers for Texas Rangers, Imposter, Kate and Leopold, Serendipity, Zu Warriors, and The Others soundtrack are also on the disc. Overall a nice collection of extras, though most of them are very short, which leads me to the point of asking why is this a 2-disc set? Couldn't these extras have been placed on the first disc? Either way, a nice compilation of goodies.

Summary

I really enjoyed The Others and highly recommend it to anyone who was interested in it, or enjoyed films like The Sixth Sense. The audio and video presentation is good and the extras are decent, though the reason this is a 2-disc set still sparks questions in my mind. Either way, this is a very nice set and should be considered for buying if you're interested in this genre of movie.

Anyone who has watched the Olsen twins grow up has to root for them as they make the transition from child to adult stars. We all have heard the horror stories of the child stars who didn't make this transition and the Olsens have had smart advice along the way, massing a huge fortune in franchise money. This first major film is an extension of their previous child films, with some mild adult themes. Backed by a powerful supporting cast, the Olsens deliver everything expected in their first film.
