Review
“Partners” is a buddy comedy that stars Ryan O’Neil as hotshot detective Sgt. Benson and John Hurt as a gay detective named Kerwin. Assigned to the murder of a gay model, the two must go undercover as life partners to infiltrate the gay community and bring a murderer to justice.
There’s not much here. You’ve probably seen a dozen or so films just like this with a few plot points changed here and there: An odd couple is forced to live or work together, at first they’re both apprehensive and it almost seems as though they’ll never get anything done but by the movie’s end, they’re working together, and both have gained an appreciation for the other one’s life style. That’s this movie in a nutshell. John Hurt’s Kerwin is far from stereotypical which makes O’Neil’s Benson look like more of a jerk and a homophobe when he makes certain comments and expects Kerwin to act a certain way. Although, I’m not sure how much of a homophobic person Benson could be if he’s willing to shack up with a homosexual and put up with men groping him through the duration of their investigation.
Any-hoo, this comedy takes far too long to get going and there are far too little laughs for it to be called a comedy. There are a few humorous parts but I was expecting more from veteran sitcom director James Burrows and French writer Francis Veber (La Cage aux folles). John Hurt turns in a depressing, sullen performance while Ryan O’Neil is given very little to do. Both actors suffer from the screenplay, which is neither inspiring nor inventive.
This came out in 1982 and the odd couple premise had already been done to death, it’s still being used today. Look, buddy comedy’s still work, but you can’t rely solely on the premise. Everything needs to come together. Like… the script needs to be funny and… you have to have great comic timing, that’s up to the actors and the director. And finally- OK, I guess this isn’t Comedy 101 but you get my point. This movie doesn’t work and if you’re going to watch it anyway, that’s fine. But you’ve been warned.
Picture and Sound
Picture is great. The quality of the picture doesn't age the film. By looking at the picture alone I thought the movie was much newer than it was. The sound is fine.

I guess I should start by admitting "Peter Pan" is one of my least favorite films from Disney's first 'golden age'. I know I'm in the minority on that one, and it probably has nothing to do with the film itself, because I never liked the original book or any other film/stage adaptation either. That said, this 1953 classic remains the single best version of J.M. Barrie's story ever made, and is actually one of Disney's early classics which remains the most faithful to the book. Fans of the film will absolutely love this 2-disc Platinum Edition, which is bit lacking in substantial extras, but features a wonderful digitally restored picture.
