Review

Like the mega-flop, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within," this animated French sci-fi film is a wonder to look at. That alone probably makes "Renaissance" worth checking out at least once. But once the novelty of a movie's unique look wears off, in the end, you still need compelling characters and a story that warrants being a full length feature film. Unlike the horrid "Final Fantasy," which was more of a product than a movie, "Renaissance" does have a decent story, but one which would have been better served up as a short subject, especially since there aren't any characters we really care about.
Karas (voiced by Daniel Craig) is a cynical, brooding cop in Paris, circa 2054. He's investigating the kidnaping of Ilona Tasuiev, a young genetic scientist who works for Avalon, an omnipresent corporation specializing in keeping everyone (who can afford it) young and beautiful. Ilona is apparently a key player in uncovering a potentially priceless genetic secret developed by her mentor, Dr. Jonas Muller, before disappearing. With the reluctant help of Ilona's older sister, Bislane, Karas begins to uncover a deep-rooted conspiracy; some people covet this genetic secret, others (like Muller) want to destroy it before the wrong people decide to start playing God. The film is a triumph of production design and motion-capture animation, presented mostly in stark black & white (no shades of gray and only minimal color), giving it an almost film-noir tone that looks like a fluidly animated graphic novel, and will likely remind a lot of viewers of "Sin City." It is truly unlike any animated movie I've ever seen, and the visuals alone go a long way in maintaining interest throughout its running time. I also found myself thinking, if this were a live-action film, not only would it be a studio-killing budget-buster, it would be downright boring at times. Though the characters are well-rendered and voiced, they're all pretty bland (the most intriguing of them, monstrous mafia boss Farfella, is hardly in the film at all). The story itself is decent, but what could have been a lean & mean 40 minute short is instead often slow and ponderous, with only its striking visuals to save it.

Picture and Sound

The film's unique look is given a great DVD transfer. Presented in enhanced 2.35:1 widescreen, the image is outstanding. Lines are sharp and the black tones are perfect (especially important in a film like this). The audio quality is terrific as well, rendered in 5.1 Dolby Surround. Good balance, no distortion.

Extras

Aside from some trailers for other films, the only extra is a 25 minute making-of documentary (in French, with English subtitles). Naturally, given the movie's unique look, a majority of the feature is about the painstaking motion-capture animation process. There's some great behind-the-scenes footage.

Summary

Visually, "Renaissance" is one of the most original adult animated films to come along in quite awhile (maybe ever). For animation buffs, it has to be seen to be believed. But viewers unimpressed with the animation & production design will likely grow bored pretty quickly. A must own for the former, a cautious rental for the latter. Similar Movies:: "Blade Runner"; "Dark City"; "A Scanner Darkly"; "Sin City"

DVD CORNER'S MOVIE VAULT: The Road Warrior

Category: DVD Reviews
My jaw continues to drop every time I pull up to the gas pump, the price per gallon seeming to rise on a daily basis, right along with my blood pressure. It wasn't that long ago five bucks got me through the week. Now, it gets me to and from work twice. Oh sure, the price drops a few cents every now and then, just enough for everyone to think $2.30 for a gallon of gas is a real bargain. But you know, sure as the tide, it'll spike to $2.75, then $3.00...etc. The funny thing is...none of this has really changed anyone's driving habits, including my own. We all still putter to work in our gas-chugging SUVs & Humvees, salivate as auto manufacturers roll out all new versions of V-8, hemi-powered Mustangs & Chargers. Face it...we'll continue to fill our tanks no matter what the cost. When it comes to gasoline, we're a nation of highway heroin addicts. And when the day comes when we can no longer afford it, we'll steal it...hell, the number of "gas 'n' dash" crimes in this country have already risen dramatically. Maybe it's just a matter of time before a screaming psycho, sporting a mohawk, assless leather pants & spiked shoulder-pads, forces your car off the road, blows you away, then makes off with the liquid gold in your gas tank. All you aging, tree-hugging hippies, proud of yourself for shelling out tens-of-thousands for your economical, environment-friendly hybrids, will be singing a different tune when the apocalypse comes and you're taken down on the highway like an injured seal pup in the jaws of a Great White. I never thought that, of all movies, "The Road Warrior" would come so close to being oddly prophetic, and I find myself thinking of the movie more and more every time I have to refinance my house to fill the gas tank. It was also one of the first movies I ever saw that made the end of the world look like a lot of fun. Speeding down the road in a souped-up Barracuda, blowing people away, crashing cars...how cool would THAT be? Of course, that was 1981. Now that I'm well-past the age where I'd look good in leather pants, I have to resign myself to the fact I'd probably be one of the first poor bastards raped and killed for the gas in my car.
